Re: A fun Thursday morning goose hunt
Looks like you guys had a good shoot. Congrats. I was gonna try and get out one last time today too, but have to get ready for deer hunting next week.
Just got this pic in my email. A couple of us got out this last weekend. We did OK. We definatly could of shot more if we were making our shots, but it was just fun to get out. Missing from the picture is stoneflyguy.

That would explain why the neck collars all had names in stead of numbers and letters

It was my first time shooting the new gun. I've since put different shims in it, with hopes of a better fit, but it seems to be more of a trial and error thing with me. Is there an easy way to fit a gun without guessing?
And it was Jeffs place out on Puget Island. Can't wait till the regular season starts.

Yes...You need to put a full choke in it, then stand 16 yards from a freshly painted 'patterning' steel plate, roughly 2'W x 3'H, mounted securely at chest level, with a distinct button or target in the middle. 'Aim' as best you can at that center 'target' and blast 3-5 shells to see where your pattern hits. Use Lead shot and wear eye protection! You'll be able to to tell hit the gun shoots where you aim/point it. This should give you an indication of gun fit and what shims might help, or if the issue is in your mounting.
If you want to do yourself a big favor, email/PM me for the name of a seasoned shooting instructor that can help with this and much more. I attended his clinic on Saturday - very helpful (bring on the ducks! )

Re: A fun Thursday morning goose hunt
I learned almost the same way as MJ described above. The only differance was, I was told to stand and pull the gun up smoothly and shoot at the target. I was told that if you actually aim and take to much time, it will give you a false point of impact.I was also told that when aiming or shooting in a controlled environment you can force you head down and make the gun hit where you want. In the field when things happen fast you tend to just pull up and shoot. If the gun fits correctly, you concentrate on the target, you should shoot better. More instict shooting. I know this is probably just the basics and there is more to it, but this is what we have done for almost all the guys in our hunt group, and we have had great results. We took guys that could not hit 1 for 10 and they now shoot 9 for 10.
And most of the improvment was after we adjusted the gun to fit. Proper gun fit is a HUGE deal that a lot of folks dont look at. I think!
Hope this helps a little. Try it and see what you think. I think it will help a bunch.
Good luck.

Re: A fun Thursday morning goose hunt
Good point, sledder. I was simply addressing the 'aim' as the first part of the equation. In reality, as you suggest, we don't aim our shotgun at targets, merely point at them. Ensuring that the gun shoots where you think it should given a limited-variable environment (standing, fixed target, time to 'aim') is the first step. Then you can look at how the gun 'fits' and how that affects one's ability to hit the target being pointed at.
I wasn't surprised by the outcome of this exercise, or by some of the others we did in the aforementioned clinic; it was more pleasantly amused with the results and the added confidence of knowing that my gun fits and when I do things right (like keep my freakin' head down )....I can be 'En Fuego!'
Good luck with it Alex! Time's runnin' out!
MJ

Re: A fun Thursday morning goose hunt
Alex, you may be able to pattern the new SBE2 fit after your SBE1 (lucky dog has both!) I know there is some fitting info in a book that I have, you are free to borrow that. Also, I can't remember who, but someeone recommended: "Shotgunning: The Art and the Science" by Bob Brister as a good reference on shotgun fit.

Re: A fun Thursday morning goose hunt
Well I spent about an hour trowing the gun up with my eyes closed and then opening them to see if the double beads where lined up. And adjusting it acordingly. Now when I shoulder the gun, the beads are perfectly lined up 9 times out of 10. I'll have to go to the range and give it a try. And if not I'll try the other methods mentioned. Thanks for the help guys.
Alex
