Default Scope elevation

So i finished my first scope mounting job got it all level but its shooting about 6 inches low @ 25 yards, should i just crank up the elevation adjustment or get a shim to raise the rear end of the scope? The shim guide that came with the scope says i need to raise it .025" to get it up 6 inches, do all of the sporting goods stores sell shims or would i need to get that from a gun shop?

Jermey,
Are you 6" high or low? If your high, you might try adjusting it out. But, I'm afraid 6" low at 25yds is too much to adjust out...that's only like 24moa and most scopes only have 10up and 10 down.....or their abouts.

Swap the front ring w/ the back, same for the mounts....many times w/ cheap mounts/rings that can be the issue.

Or you can lap the appropriate ring to lower one end or the other.

Or you can not put friction tape on one end and double up on the other mount. I use painters tape for friction and compressed it's about .002" per layer. Doesn't take much.

Although I am NOT a fan of shims. As a last resort a alum pop can can be fashioned into a shim. I Must say though I like to put shims under the mount not in the ring under the scope.

Personally I like my scopes sitting very near close to center of their adjustment range when initially mount up the the scope and bore sight it. having a scope adjusted clear off to one end of the adjustment range can interfer w/ sight picture (image isn't centered) and adjustment range vertically can be reduced if scope is clear off to one side or the other.
Hope this helps.

25 thousands? Yikes! That's too much to shim.
Flip the rings mounts around and recheck.
Kinda wish ya had a laser bore sighter about now huh? ME TOO! I Keep dragging my feet on getting one of those. Sure makes rechecking zero and situations like this a snap.

But if you provide an accurate drawing I can punch ya whatever shim you need.

I have a few questions:

What is the distance between scope center and bore center?

At what distance do you expect the round to cross the line of sight? (this depends on scope mounting but I would expect 30 yards + or -)

At what point in the adjustment is the scope currently?

What rifle/scope ring/mount setup are we dealing with?
