Hurricane John intensifies back to a Category 3
September 1, 2006
All flights to and from Los Cabos were canceled today due to weather.
Hurricane John has intensified back to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph and was expected to make landfall. John is forecast to track very close to the southern tip of Baja, bringing heavy rain, high wind and high waves later today, according to the National Weather Service.
Alaska Airlines took measures yesterday to fly up to 105 additional passengers who wanted to leave Los Cabos in advance of John. Besides the five regularly scheduled departures Thursday from Los Cabos, Flight 217 between Loreto and Los Angeles stopped there to accommodate as many as 70 passengers. Also, the aircraft on one of the regular flights was upgraded from a 737-700 to an 800, adding 35 seats.
Two round-trip flights were canceled Monday and Tuesday — one on the Seattle-Miami route due to Tropical Storm Ernesto and another on the Los Angeles-Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo route. No more flights are scheduled to or from Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo until tomorrow.
Loads on flights to the affected areas have been lighter than normal, said Chris Heine, manager of customer operations.
While Ernesto has regained strength and is classified as a tropical storm, it is not expected to have any further impact on East Coast operations.
Passengers planning to travel to Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta today or tomorrow are offered the opportunity to reschedule their travel on or before Sept. 21 at no charge. This policy is on alaskaair.com.
