Default Satelite phones

Anyone ever rent a satelite phone to take hunting? there are a couple of websites out there that have them, less than $100 a week they ship it to you and you ship it back.

I rented one last year from a radio station in Enterprise -kwvr.
I was hunting alone in a new area a few miles back and did not know where I would be until I found the elk when I got there. Called home with GPS co-ordinates and to check in a couple of times. Also felt nice having it in case I got injured.
Worked pretty good.

My wife would love that! It can be tough to drive a couple hours into a town to call home, but you have to do it when you have wife/kid at home. Especially on those solo hunts.

Not sure about local rentals. We use either Satellite Phones Direct out of Georgia and one other in Washington (I will find the name). Our company has 4 or 5 units. I will have one with me this year, since my wife is also due on November 7.

In my experience, they work well, there are different plans and phone types so a little homework on what will fit your needs may be needed.

Spirit Wireless 7609 SE Lake Rd. Portland Or.(503-723-5193)
We've bought 4 phones from them and they have rentals. Good Company.

I was looking at the disposable cell phones at Walmart. The clerk said a brand called Trac Phone worked Ok. It cost 20 bucks with another $30 for a 120 minute phone card.

Anybody try these?

Haven’t used the disposable cell phones, but I’m sure they work just fine. The only thing is all cell phones need cell towers to relay your call.

I think that’s why there was an interest in satellite phones. You can be far from cell towers and pay phones. No need to drive into town to give your wife your GPS coordinates. (yeah right, code for tell your wife how much you miss her and love her, and how you’ll make it up to her).

The company I work for has several satellite phones since we do a lot of work up by Mt. St. Helens. They are nice when they work, but they are not as good as everyone thinks where you can stand anywhere and call out. If you are on top of a ridge and are lucky enough to have a satellite in the right position, you can call out. But not for very long and it will drop you. Just my experience. Better than a cell phone though.

Rented a satelite phone last year for a Montana Hunting trip because of a baby being due. Ended up not going because he showed up early but my hunting partner took the phone and it worked really well. I don't remember the company but it was one of the ones you find on a web search. Go over and search the Salty Dog board also, there have been a couple threads on there about satelite phones and if I remember correctly there are some local places that were cheaper than the online sites. Good luck.
