Gorge Bighorns
Made a quick trip out to Baker and back and got to eyeball the bighorns both directions. For those of you heading out that way tomorrow they were between milepost 120 and 121. There were about 30-40 right around the 120 mark, and 2 GREAT BIG old rams right in line with the 121 post. I really wanted to stop for some photos since the big boys were only about 60-80 yards off the pavement, but there is no place safe to make a stop. Keep your eyes open and I am sure you won't miss them. This is really about the furthest west I have seen them. They usually are around the 126 mile marker. Perhaps they are broken up a bit and I just missed some of them. I also got to see a couple of groups or antelope on the Woelpern ranch. Just keep your eyes open. Just thought I would share the info. All you stick flickers have fun and be safe. Anyone heading for the Steens might want to check the fires. I talked to a crew in Baker that was heading that direction and they say it is supposed to be really ugly down there. They had heard it might get tough to buy fuel since all the fire rigs will have priority and there are not to many AM/PM gas pumps in that country. Might be wise to pack an extra 5 or 10 gallons with you. The other concern was loss of power in Frenchglen and Fields and with an ice shortage because of it. Not hard and firm info, just what I was told by fire contractors heading that direction. Sounds like they also have the small town motels pretty well booked up.
