Default 6.1 pounder out of Olalla Lake

After seeing the picture of the bass that Lunkerlander posted I decided to go try out Olalla lake on Tuesday night. I was down in Depoe Bay to go out on a charter deep see fishing so my fater and I drove up to the lake. It really is a beautiful lake. When we arrived I thought it looked like a trout lake and wasnt sure if there were really any bass in it. Fished it for about 45 minutes then we decided to walk around the trail to the right of the boat launch. Walked aroun d to the first point on the right with the big downed tree. Tossed senkos and jerk baits, spinners and even some topwaters, but finally decided on throwing out the blue and black jig that Lunkerlander said he caught his big fish on. I had a little cheap one frow walmart that was black and blue and I added a black zoom jig trailer. Tossed it out there and let it hit bottom. Reeled up the slack line and the line suddenly took off. I burried the hook hard and fought the fish for about 10 minutes on my ultra light spinning ugly stick. I left my bait caster in the car because I figured it would be difficult to cast it there from shore. I had 6lb test on my pull and when I pulled the fish up on shore, my line snapped so I jumped on the fish and ended up strateling it with it between my legs and managed to grab it with my hands. Picked it up and put it on my digital scale and it weighed 6.1 pounds. I threw her back so she could go make more little fishies, but I didnt have a camera to take a picture of her. I now am a firm believer that jigs catch big fish

Congrats on the big fish. And yes jigs will catch you some big fish.

If you now start to fish with jigs more ofter just keep in mind that it is rare that the fish will "suddenly take off". Most of the time you will barely feel it hit and the bass tend to spit them quick, so if you are not sure and something just feels not quite right SET THE HOOK.(this is just my on fishing jigs)

Congrats man! Black and blue jig must be the thing there. It is a pretty cool lake. I thought it looked more like a trout lake too the first time I saw it.

haha i believe him 10 times more than you about your so called 13lber that you happened to have lost the pictures of. I'm pretty sure that if i ever caught a 13lb(OREGON STATE RECORD) That i would, you know maybe have a few pictures or something most likely a huge framed one and a replica cuz i'd let the fish go. haha what a joke.

Bad Wood: awesome job and congratulations. NOW: Don't expect to get that lucky again if you continue to fish jigs on a light spinning rod and 6 pound line. All you will do is educate a bunch of fish and kill a few (not to mention birds) with hooks and lengths of line attached to them. Gear up, son, Olalla is too special to be treated this way. Dave

I hit it again when I was coming back from coos bay. I caught a 2.5 lb LM. It is a lot larger than what I realized. I plan on taking my boat down there some time soon.

slower retrieve baits, and plastics usually catch the big ones, I personally like the pre spawn, and fall periods to catch the big ones, if you have access to deep sheltered water post spawn can be good also.

Good luck, and welcome to I-fish.

I dont know whats up. I have been catching bigger fish this year. I havent been fishing the same way but I have been experimenting with different retrieves. I have caught the last big one off of a blue and black jig and the one before that off of a red senko. My friend lost a fish out at Vernonia that was about six pounds.

Superfluke those are some toads. I thought you needed a $45,000 bass boat to catch fish that big.

You don't need a $45,000 boat to catch the big ones. We just have a drift boat and it works fine.

To get big fish you need to go to the right lake, like silver.

very true!! a small lake usually means over crowding, and not enough food to grow quickly.. in alot of lakes its a good idea to eat the smaller ones so the bigger ones have more food to grow!!

The good things about good little lakes is that not alot of people know about them.

yeah but you dont hear about 10 pounders coming out of them... every lake or pond has its big fish. chances are in a small lake they wont get over 7... i like to fish all the small lakes in king county (people usually only trout fish in them) like lake boren in newcastle.. i have seen a couple good 6 pounders in there but that lake is 49 feet deep and its tiny! but the fish have lots of room to swim since there is so much deep water structure.. sometimes i want to fish with alot more people here to see what they are really about... i see lots of talk and would like to see how people perform on the lake! were having a silver lake fish in in about a month! who wants to test their skills and see if they can win the big pot?

One of the reasons Hagg is so good is because they stock trout in there.
