Default Best hunting tool

Now that we had the worst hunting gimmick thread, i am curious to see what people's favorite hunting tool is...

Mine is easy --- brand new Dave SMith Flapper.
2nd choice - hot lips double..
third - our new scott and Evan engineered Duck spinning wing decoys.

Ducks== with out a doubt my beautiful yellow lab!

Big Game=== with all that is out there to buy, beleave it or not, my best tool is my own brain!

( I have a couple friends at two ends of the financial world! 1 makes serious bank and has all the toys a man can wish for, you can can count all his animals on 1 hand. The other has struggled all his life, very poor childhood, never has found that 1 good steady job, just one of those guys that can't catch a break! except when it comes to hunting, he has taken some awesome animals that some guys would grow a freaking ego(including me ) this guy has no hunting tools(toys) except his weapon and his brain! I'm so thankful I have these two as friends, I learned at a very young age the difference between what I want, and what I need

I was thinking this thread was going another direction and already had compiled a list of all the "Tools" i've met while hunting.. and was attempting to determine who the "best tool" was....

Good waders..and a good jacket. if you're wet and cold..it sucks no matter what else you have with you. lol.

If we can only vote for one thing......I vote my rangefinder.

I can brave the cold w/o gortex, I can survive a night out if I get lost w/o my maps and gps, and my Old Timer has serve me fine for years........BUT........

My rangefinder has by far accounted for more animals on the ground that all the others. The rangefinder has helped me hone my shooting skills to the point I KNOW I CAN MAKE that shot. No more guessing, estimating and such.
It's 426yds?... 22 down angle?... ok, hold 350... bang... dead.

Yes, I could even do w/o my 7x30 Stieners
but my Rangefinder? NO WAY!!

Toss up, my White's or my buck knife. Won't leave home w/o both for big game.

Birds, that's easy, my faithful hounds, past and present. The White's are pretty dang handy there too.

With good binos--you do less walking

Mine would have to be one of the several pairs of high end binoculars I would happen to have with me.

Map/Compass/GPS is a very strong second though

Here's one guys dont think about much......PMA (Postive Mental Attitude)This accounts for more game in the freezer than just about anything else. How many guys hunt as hard on the second to last day as they did on the second day?

I think that binos, clothing, boots, etc are a given. What I think of as tools are knife, saw, leatherman, etc.
My favorite tool is my Wyoming saw.

However, if you take a more general definition of the word tool, then the list is as follows in order of importance.
[*]My brain (don't leave home without it)[*]Steiner predator binos 8 X 32 (you can't shoot it if you can't find it)[*]My gun (and ammo)[*]buck 110 folding hunter[*]Danner boots[*]map & compass[*]GPS with topo maps[*]Wyoming saw[*]old timer sharp finger knife[*]Good meat pack

Check my avatar

If you cant see them, you cant kill them.

People spend $1000 of dollars in a years time between, goretex, fuel, tents, etc... but show up at camp with a sub $100 pair of binos, and complain for the next year how there are no animals.

Binoculars are one of those things, you get what you pay for.

Fire:

Depending on your area time of year and fire danger.

We used to light fires along the ridges to get the smoke moving down the draws. It's the best cover scent made.
And it works !

A Leatherman. The simple utility of it makes it my "always carry" tool.

It can do a lot. Mine, for example, routinely is a trout-bonker and then hook remover. I also remember fashioning a new shear pin for an outboard by filing down a small nail. We wore out the file on 2 leatherman's. They replaced both!
