I'll be out there. If you see a really tired guy, about 6'2, running in pain, say hi. It's probably me or my dad

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Limit on the HTC hunt is one runner, hair longer than ears.
I fully expect to see elk too, that's the funny thing. That and the run should be good training for my elk season

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
CWH I am not a runner but I respect you guys so we drive very cafefully I know how nerve racking it is to run along that road in the dark with a bunch of not enough sleep bowhunters..When your done can we talk you into coming and packing for us. We always figured if we could a couple of runners to help us we would be done in half the time

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
ehunter, I expect to be more or less out of commission by Sunday. But on the other hand, elk meat can be very convincing
Honestly, I've run in the country most of my life. I've never been more scared for my life than when I started running in Hillsboro. When old country roads become small highways through the subdivisions with constant traffic, you have got yourself a deathtrap. Before I learned some good routes, I got myself in a couple situations where the shoulder ran out on a blind corner, and it was either fender or blackberries.
In the country, you can hear the cars coming for at least 1/4 mile. And at night, you can see the headlights before they come around the corner. As long as people aren't running down the middle of the road, no problem!

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Ah...but they do run down the middle of the road, sometimes! Vans in one land, runners in the other and then the guy in the middle on a corner, because it is closer! Oh, I'm glad I don't have to work this weekend, I might be able to keep the house and bank account.
Have a good run cwh! I'll be up in the hills bugling back at ehunter and limbhanger with my Fox Pro then run 100 yards and call again!

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Aaahh Hood to Coast.
Sorry, but this is the worst weekend in the world for this. Every year it coincides with opening weekend archery hunting and it suuuucks! I hunt out in the Birkenfeld area and try to get there about an hour before daylight. This is exactly when and every van or minivan from the northwest is. This year will be especially brutal. There is road construction on a couple of bridges in the area and no way to get around everyone.
Oh well, just have to wake up an hour earlier.

My hunting partner lives in Mist and won't go opening weekend every year cuz he has to keep people from taking over his front yard and crapping on his doorstep.

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Yep, some of the local rednecks get a little creative. I know one that owns some dump trucks, he piles rock in the wide spots by his house so they don't park their vans there running all night next to his bedroom. He usually works on Saturdays and he and his wife don't like to drive tired!!

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
That's awesome. It would suck to have people taking your neighborhood over. I've never done this "race" before. Sounds like a zoo.
That reminds me, I need to dig out my orange safety vest tonight. I hereby promise not to trespass or crap in anyone's yard

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Well... I survived the big race. No serious injuries on our team. I was a little dissapointed that we never saw any elk, but we weren't really in a good spot around daylight.
I now understand why people are not too fond of this event. I thought it would be a few runners and a few vans on some side roads. It was absolute blockage on several roads. Serious traffic, which could be pretty frustrating if you are trying to get out to hunt. I did see the ambulance come flying by a couple of times, but I don't know what the story was on that.
I looked for elk in the back of pickups as they drove by, but never saw any

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Yea CWH it would have been better to have it the weekend before but we bowhunters are a minority and we get no respect sniff  but I am glad that you had a safe run.

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
I used to live along the route in Warren. About 10 pm the runners start coming through. Of course the yard already has trash from the walkers coming earlier in the morning. The dogs start barking at the people with their funny lights bouncing up and down. That wakes up the kids, then everyone is awake. Some of the vans like to honk and go woohoo at their team. I heard it all night long. Oh, I almost forgot the occasional urinator.
Then to go bow hunting, the runners aren't nearly as bad as the vans. Even when they're on roads with out runners, like Cater Road and Scappoose-Vernonia highway, they drive 25 mph and won't pull over. Gee, I wonder why the locals don't like them.
Anybody know what the entry fee for HTC is? I think I heard over $100/head. Let's see -- 15,000 participants at $100 head, someone is getting rich. I know the motorcycles who "volunteer" to patrol at night get paid $35 and a T shirt. That doesn't even qualify as minimum wage.
Here's another part I don't understand, maybe a runner can tell me. Part of the route is along a gravel road in the dark. With all those vehicles, it has got to be dusty. How do you breathe? and more importantly, how do the vehicles see you through the suspended dust?

Re: Hood to Coast this weekend BTW
Geez, last time I "volunteered" for soemthing, I didn't expect to get paid at all, let alone make minimum wage. I think that's in the definition of "volunteer" somewhere, but I didn't look it up to confirm.
Yes, someone is making a bunch of money off HTC. Good for them. I wish I had thought of the idea first, but I guess I'll have to wait for another group of suckers.
To answer your question, you can either use a bandana, a painter's mask (paper filter) or just breathe the dust in. Or, like me, you can luck out and not run a dusty leg. For visibility, you are required to wear a reflective vest, and encouraged to wear a headlamp and/or flashing light. I did all 3 when I ran at night.
