I didn't believe it then, I still don't believe now. Right in front of families - including mine - a couple, in detail 3, men were standing and walking right nude in front of everyone. I just can't seem to comprehend the immense lack of respect and integrity these men have exhibited when they strutted their stuff around in front of families.

We were have some fun swimming in the columbia just upstream from rooster rock, anyone of you's who know this place, it's the sand island that has those shallow sand bars stretching into the middle of the river.

There was even a time when one of those men were walking not a couple of yards away from a family of a dozen. AND one of those creeps once came near my family not 20 feet away...

You know, there's one word I would use to describe these men, I can't say it here, it isn't a bad word, only one used on those that problems with their "head"... Crazy would be another word I would describe these heads. One of them would walk all the way straight into the middle of the river, ending up bobbing his head (no life jackek, folks!) in between two boats in the freezing water. Came out to dry out and went back in. They just walk around, looking at the sandy ground, hands on their hips, and I would assume were mad.

Does anyone know if that island or any on the columbia is 'nude'? I was really gonna call the cops on them, but we didn't want any trouble, since I wasn't too sure if it was legel or not. If it isn't...I want to be the one busting the call that puts some clothes on these crazy men.

Just saddening to see that kind of profuse lack of respect to others around them. :depressed: :depressed: :depressed:

Hate to tell ya this, but this area has been "nudie" for a long time. Should be some big signs posted to warn the families, but I've never seen any.

I've heard for years that by Rooster Rock beach is a nude beach area. There is also one somewhere on Sauvies Island.

Yes both places are legally nude beaches and marked with signs. Both have been there for a long time. Last year when I went by S. Island in a boat there were at least 200 bathers struttin their stuff. Not much you can do but keep your kids away from both locations. I would rather have them in their dedicated locations than to have them pick their own spots. I also think there is a rule that you must be fat and ugly to strip.

Just FYI- they are actually state sanctioned parks. And there are warning signs on the North end of the park.

I've been there are few times with the wife and other couples friends...it is actually rather annoying when people with families come onto those sandbars to play when it is very obviously a "nude" area.

When the water is up we used to ski behind the island up there to avoind the wind waves. You just have to keep your eyes on the river and not the beach. On the back side of the island they moor their boats and make a weekend of it.
As was stated above, both beaches have been that way for a long long time and I'd also rather them have designated areas to partake in it than be suprised by it in various places in the metro area.

Don't be too quick to judge. Those areas are state sanctioned, and go ahead and call the cops. They'll ask YOU to leave because you are causing problems in an area designated as, being politically correct, clothing optional. I have friends that go there all summer and the biggest complaint they have is all the gawkers and "textiles" that come to harrass them. All they want is a small area to call their own. You have the whole rest of the river. So....move on to another more clothed area.

Well it's not exactly "their own". State property belongs to all citizens, but I guess the state allows them to practice their sun worshiping religion there. When my kids were young 30 years ago I just avoided Rooster Rock, and we all just joked about the nude beach. But really, now that you bring it up, if these people want a place of their own they should get it the American way and Buy it!! The rest of the population doesn't owe them a place to get naked. That public land should be for the enjoyment of all the citizens, and that's a great long sandy beach that families could enjoy, one of the best, really. Why should the nudies get to appropriate this great public place for their enjoyment, effectively excluding 95% of the population by their behavior?

Kinda like when the hog lines take up all of the OC area and noone can recreational boat around there. Just kidding of course, as I'm fishing OC also. I remember in the 70's and I lived in Damascus, Rock Creek ran behind my house and there were always skinny dippers at the 40' falls on that creek for us kids to run into in the summer. At least now they are all in one place. Or 2 places. I don't partake, but don't really have a problem with it either. I'd almost rather my kids see that than the hookers walking 82nd when I drive up there. At least I'm further away.

They haven't appropriated anything. It's "clothing optional", not "nudity mandatory". All that the "nudies" ask is that you don't give them guff for being nude in a spot that allows it.

They have two spots in a very, very large area where they can walk amongst nature in the way that they were brought into this world. I think that for the sake of harmony we can find many other places to take our textiled families when we'd rather not see naked people around.

Well I well jump in on this, if you think these places are bad, I would have to say most of you all have never been to Europe, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, on any given day if the sun comes out, in the parks, river banks, on there boats, ect,ect,ect, you well run into people who just like the sun.
Now for the foreigner's, they just look and stair, shake there heads.
Here, the beaches listed above, they have been around for most of 40 years, nothing new to anyone who has lived in the Portland area.

The area is divided into two areas, one signed area says nudity is allowed and may be encountered behind the signs. The other area has it's beaches, picnic tables, boat launch, etc.
Make your choice. Many choose not to be like you.
Over a hundreds miles of river and beaches in the area on both sides of the Columbia and these people get 1/4 mile.

The difference between Europe and the States, Norski, is the villification of the nude human form in the United States. Many people are raised to feel that the nudity is a horrible thing, and that they should be ashamed of their bodies. That is, unless they look like the pretty people on the magazines.

America needs a serious overhaul with that problem right there. We need to see naked people as people first, instead of as sexual objects.

I understand your discomfort Fish Mode, since you were out with your family and you had no idea but, it's the human body! Explain the situation to your kids and hightail it out of there. I'm sure many(not all) of the people that frequent those beaches are kinked and flagrant about their blatant disregard for unassuming families.
However, Americans are way, WAY too caught up and concerned with such a "natural" state yet, most of you will take your children to horribly violent movies or let them watch tv with very graphic language and violence!
F A R, FAR worse and much more psychologically damaging IMHO.
Many would leave that area in a huff only to take their kids to see Blood Simple or go get them a violent video game to shoot and kill people to make up for seeing those awful naked human beings!

Whats the big deal?? It's the human body, nothing to be ashamed of. As far as beaches go they're the nicest ones around. Hardly any trash (just what washes in) and people are pretty respectful overall. No "riff raff" like some of the other parks in the area. The regulars die hards do a good job of policing it and if they spot anything that children shouldn't see they'll be the first ones to report it to the authorities.

They didn't "appropriate" that section of river, you're still free to use it. So if there's a section of beach that allows fishing should the non-fishing people tell you to go buy your own section of river since you "appropriated" that as a fishing area?

While I would agree that the human body is a beautiful thing, and nothing to be ashamed of, there is a proper time and place for everything. Being naked where families with children can run across you unexpectedly is wrong.

I don't give a rip what they do in Europe. We're not in Europe, and our ancestors left for very good reasons. If you want to do what they do in Europe, then move there. But here, if I were to run across someone naked in public, after I got done laughing, I would tell them in no uncertain terms what I thought of public nakedness, and I would not stop. We do have freedom of speech in this country, protected by the constitution, and I would exercise it, regardless of what they thought. If they don't like me exercising my freedom of speech, then perhaps they will appreciate the fact that I do not like their exercising a non-existent freedom of nudity. If they really don't like it, they can move to Europe.

I am not a prude. I am a person who has values. If I were a prude who did not like the human body, my wife and I would not have our seventh child on the way. Community standards do not in any way condone public nudity, and therefore it should be kept out of the public. What they do in private is their business.

If it offends your set of beliefs, YOU have the CHOICE to not have your family exposed to it. It is very well signed and there is nothing visible from the start of the trails. In other words, the only way you would be exposed to it, is if you looked for it.

For the guy that had the horror of his family seeing that, it seems to me that he spent an inordinate amount of time in an area that social nudism is the norm. Also, given the weather this weekend, I will guarantee you that there where more than 3 people nude. I would guess closer to 500+.

It is amazing that what completely disgusts one person, is totally natural to another.

I remember visiting that beach a very long time ago (25+ years) when I was in college. It was a clothing optional beach then, too. I haven't done that since, but I don't judge others because they do.

If I was as disgusted as the original poster was, I would have left the area immediately, especially if I was concerned about my children. Why stay and keep watching?

Nude beaches are no different than any other beach, except for the perverts lurking in the bushes with binoculars, cameras, etc. Those people are the real problem.
Back in my younger days, I spent some time at RR and SI. Never had or saw any problems (except for sunburn)
Even when crowded they're fairly quiet and mellow.
Head over to the textile beach, and whaddya get? Drunks, partying teenagers, screaming kids, fights, litter, boom boxes blasting, etc etc.
No thanks. I'll take the nude beach any day, even nowadays when I keep my clothes on. Better class of people, IMHO.

I agree Dave, and in truth that's the major problem with what's "healthy for a society" – as long as it is subjective, which is now the norm in our post-modern culture, one thing is as good as another which becomes a bit of a dangerous spiral. This entire thread is full of relativism and the irony is relativism is the only absolute today.

Public nudity is accepted, many types of photography are accepted...but each are not forms of "healthy" sexuality in truth. But sadly some trap themselves in thinking they aren’t really hurting themselves; it’s all in good fun is their mantra. I don’t protest what they do, no one is picketing them, they can have their opinion, I actually feel bad for them for in the end each group stuck in these unhealthy forms of sexuality lose the genuine intimacy they were created for; they very thing they are looking to gain is lost.

There actually is alot of families that you run into out at Sauvies, granted you run into some problem people who like to stare. Mostly it's people from every age group, out having fun in the sun.

Lots of familes, and young couples, mainly people are just out there to catch some sun, play in the water, and read a good book.

Why does society have to immediately place nudity with being sexual? I don't get it? It seems a shame that you would be labeled a pervert or have a mental illness if you enjoyed going skinny-dipping once in awhile.

I couldn't find anything in the Oregon statutes that made it a crime unless you were caught being naughty with a partner or by yourself. That would be sexual. There was nothing that I could find that made OK or against the law to be nekked on federal land either.

Maybe there are a few Ifish law folks who could tell us what they know?
