Elk Calls
How many cow calls do you own ?
I think I have them all now. Lots of reeds and two of the hand calls. Of course I have the mouth calls that you put on your tongue. I never can quit get the sound that I hear when I see the elk in the woods. The problem with most of those is that it's easy to make a mistake. When I practice with them, there's enough times I goof up that I think it would be a distaster during a hunt. Plus they don't have a high enough pitch.
Finally after buying Fighting cows someone showed me a full proof, idiot proof one cow call that sound perfect to me.
and they are the most expensive ones out there.
Sceery..... I bought a three calls and I love them.
They are high pitched like real elk and no matter how hard I try I can't screw up using them..
Ed Sceery. About $20.00 at G.I.joes and $16.00 at sportsmans Warehouse.
I bet I have $300.00 invested in Cow calls. I am a real sucker for sure.
Dang I could have bought a new Hoyt.
It will be worth the confidence to have them though.

Re: Elk Calls
I have a bunch too...but I love the Hoochie Mama. It worked extremely well in '04. I used it less in '05 just due to scenarios I was in...But I've spent $$$ on calls period...I'm a junkie.
I've saved a bit this year on elk calls but of course I've sunk the $$$ into duck calls...

Re: Elk Calls
I'm in the same boat...not as bad as you, but getting there. I've got 4 Primos mouth reeds that i'm working on, a hoochie mama, a Primos Hyper Lip double reed, the Sceery call that you're talking about, not to mention, my Abe & Sons bugle can double as a cow call in a pinch. I'm trying to work with and get used to those mouth reeds as much as I can! I'm getting better and more consistent, so maybe by next week i'll be totally hands free

Re: Elk Calls
I've got 3 or 4 mouth reeds, hyper lip single and double, hoochie mama, and a bugle. For me, and I'm no expert, I think I'd only use the mouth reeds to stop and elk for a shot, cause like mentioned earlier, they're too inconsistent and don't sound good every time. I'll use the hypers and hoochie for calling 'em in.
good luck...

Re: Elk Calls
Ok I admit it too I am cow junkie but my favorite calls are still reeds. I use them all from time to time to very my sounds espeicaly if I have busted them or am calling to the same bunch. I prefer my reeds over all calls but there are a couple of elk cow calls the bulls seem to like better...I try not to add up $$$$ when I think I about calls but I probably have close to 50 dollars in reeds  alone...grin!!
PS I look for new call every year one they have not heard not sure it is possible but that is my excuse and I am sticking with it...

Re: Elk Calls
I kinda like reeds, for every 5 or 6 I buy, only 1 will feel, sound and fit right. I have a few that I carry. I also use the Hoochie Mama and the Abe and Sons. The problem that I've recently ran into is that I've been buying Duck Calls and now my elk are starting to quack.

Re: Elk Calls
Anyone tried the Mac Daddy bugles? I am thinking about getting one this year, but would like to hear a good report before plunking down $40!
I have a couple of mouth reeds, a Sceery, and the Berry Thunder Bugle.

Re: Elk Calls
True call junkie here, even bought both Mac Daddy and Miss Mac Daddy. I actually like Miss Mac Daddy better. I like to locate call by calling a high note and trailing off low and cutting it off and that call works real good for that. If I put all the calls I have on a string and put it around my neck I would have quite a necklace.

Re: Elk Calls
Abalone, the screery call your referring to is a fantastic call, when they first hit the market they were the bomb, the only problem i have had is if you call often they will clog up with spit (have to pull rubber off and dry reed)of course this also happens with any bite and blow except the old original elk talk.I have 2 screery calls (hint, stuff cotton balls into the barrel of one and it mutes it back a bit,i am like the rest of you i have nearly every cow call made, newest edition is the primos cow girl..yee-haw

Re: Elk Calls
Lets see, Ive got a primos bull horn bugle, two primos mouth reeds, the sonic dome and sonic dome triple, I have the hot lips with tone converter, the cow-girl, a sceery ace-1 bull coaxer and the butolo bubble call. I think thats it.
Its funny you like the sceery so much Abolone. I do think the bulls like them pretty well, but my experience is that they fill up with spit and stop working good pretty fast, thats why I use the hot lips most of the time. Am I doing something wrong?
As for bugles, I think Im about done with primos. My dad just got a power bugle at sportsmans for $22. It sounds awesome and is a lot easier to blow than my bullhorn.

Re: Elk Calls
I think the reeds are the way to go. I always wonder if the elk get accustomed to the sounds of man made cow calls. It seems like they work incredible for the first year or two after they come out. The hoochie is a great example, every guy I know uses the hoochie (so do I). The first year the came out, they seemed to work incredibly. Last year I had quite a few elk run away as soon as I used it.
Reeds are great mainly because the sound different all of the time, you can bugle or cow call, and no movement.

Re: Elk Calls
Hoochie is on the back burner for me. Mouth reeds and the cow girl are on deck this season. I have the pack bugle but have never used it in action. This year will be my first opportunity to hunt the rut.(If I don't kill a cow first.)

Re: Elk Calls
i've got a few of both types, mouth/hand. I really prefer to use the mouth reeds just for the simple fact that i can't draw my bow with 1 hand. I do think that every call has the right time for use.

Re: Elk Calls
I did some scouting this weekend and discovered another feature of the Sceery I like. They are rubber coated and don't make a sound while sneaking around in the forest except when you blow into them.
Most of the other calls rattle against the bino's or other things you have around you neck.
