Any CR salmon reports?
This forum is strangely quite on the subject. Maybe everyone's out finding tuna for the tournament. How about a rumor at least!

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
I just got a report that charter boats out of Ilwaco pretty much limited yesterday with a claimed 60 pounder (although it was never weighed - why would someone do that?)
Anyway, it sounds like they are close. Hopefully, they are stacking up off the mouth.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
I posted this on the Ifish community board. (Oh by the way I was only fish one rod. The problem I have is I go out in a 18ft boat. So when the weather get sporty I get, it justs take a little time to get back in. )
Fished Saturday. Cross the bar at 9am not bad at all. Weather was good until 2pm when wind picked up. Wind waves were 3 to 4 feet on top a 2 foot swell at 2:30pm. Took me 2 hours to come in, I was 4 mile west of CR.
Fishing was good except couldn't keep anything.
1 20" chinook
4 22" chinooks
1 29" coho non-clipped
1 60" shark
4 lost before getting to the boat

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
Fished Sunday after the fog cleared the river a bit; 7:30 or so till 11:30 - heard of one caught early near the bridge on the WA side, lots of bait fish, water temp 62 degrees, rough as snot.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
Saturday three of us got out in my boat before max ebb and started Sw of CR in 300+ feet - nothing for a couple hours. we moved to 250', 3 miles SW of CR and started getting sporadic action. missed quit a few, but eventually got three in the box. big and fat silvers at 30". I think they are still scatttered. I heard reports of limits, 1 per rod and no keepers from others out there. it started getting sporty in the early afternoon.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
talked to a guide at the Hammond cleaning station on saturday. He had 4 fish. He said they were caught way south of the cr. No other info shared. I asked a fish checker. Stated he checked 21 fish in the ocean and 2 in the river all day. Not very many people out there though. Maybe 10 trucks in the lot at 5am. We tried for salmon for about an hour after hali fishing and had no takedowns. Hope this helps.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
I just posted on ifish non-salty. My buddy fished with a guide yesterday by the bridge and they caught a very nice 30 lb nookie.
They heard of one other guide boat that was checked with 3 fish.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
I am looking at rugged conditions
on the NOAA report - e.g., 7 ft
swells at 7 seconds.
So what's it like near the CR in
particular? Can anyone comment?
Thanks and kind regards

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
I fished three rods Saturday for about four hours. One silver in the box, one turned back shaker chinook, and two good take downs, probably one silver and one chinook.
We got out there at about 10 because we waited for the runoff to stop. It sounds like those boats that snuck out before it started had a lot of hookups, but very few fish landed. Charters and private boats alike were losing many fish at the boat. I heard one charter hooked 20 fish before finally coaxing one into the net. From the sounds of it, some of the lost were very nice fish.
Sunday we took a couple runs at the bar before calling uncle. It was fogging, sloppy, and they were starting to break across the bar. We trolled the river for a few hours up near the bridge but did not see nor have any action. The fact that there were some very salty boats in the river (Grady's, Pro-lines, Stripers, Trophy's and the 38' Minaki) is the proof filled pudding that the ocean was nasty.
Monday I fished with guide Eric Linde and we managed one 16 lb or so chinook for the boat. From cell phone chatter it sounded like other guides faired as well or better. I think this was the first day there were any fish to speak of caught in the river. Seven just by guides we spoke to... poor at best, but perhaps signs of things getting a little better.
Overall, not a bad weekend of fishing (I even got to go watch some volleyball at the Seaside tourney after we got blown off Sunday) but probably the worst three days of catching I've seen down there in all my years Here's to hoping the ocean lays down and the fish show!
Tight lines, TOC.

Erik, you made me laugh on this one ya young whipper snapper. Nah really, I realize you have actually fished it for many years even at your young age. Agreed, it is an extremely disappointing start to the fall season up here. My vacation is coming up and I sure hope things pick up real fast or I will be doing a lot of cabin work and Mr. Fisherman will be mowing lawns for entertainment.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
Friday was horrible.
I braved the bar at 5:30 and couldn't find a wingman, so I gave up on tuna.
We lost a couple and had a couple drivebys in 5 hours of fishing. I was 5 miles south of the CR buoy and the charters around me were doing lousy, so I don't think it was my technique.
This is only the second time I have been skunked outside in the last 150 times I have gone out. I don't think anyone was doing too great- lets hope the rest of the season goes better.
If I were you, I would try for tuna until the salmon come in in decent numbers.
Good luck,
Mike C

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
Yeah Bernie, I actually thought about how to phrase that sentence for a couple minutes. Knowing some people wouldn't know how many years that was. So, I've only fished it for ten years, but that's a few to compare things with. Hope things turn for the better, TOC.
PS- Monday with Linde with obviously fished inside because the bar was closed to 36' and under for pretty much the duration of the day due to hazardous conditions. A sloppy ocean is pretty much adding insult to injury when coupled with poor fishing.

"Sucks" sounds like the proper term. I sure hope the Ocean coops for Tuna runs until/unless the Salmon show!

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
One gill net boat reported catching multiple Silvers, fishing a 9" mesh. Report Monday at noon friend had 3 silvers in the box, all over 14lbs.

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
My boat had pretty good luck on Tuesday at the CR buoy and south a couple of miles. The fishing was slow, but we just followed the 53-54 degree water around and we were done by 10:30. Biggest fish was an 11.5 pound coho, 1 undersize chinook- all on anchovies. Bait vender said that a guy he knows got into a pretty good bite in 150-200 feet of water straight off from the lighthouse today... Might be worth a shot, even though it is rougher up there!

Re: Any CR salmon reports?
8/17/2006, just finished cleaning the salmon, am ocean was 7 ft. swell but nice bar and no wind outside until about 2, then it howled, we pulled up in time to get back in before sheep started serious grazing. Skookum you're the man, called me into a great bite off the lighthouse on the north side in 130 ft. of water, birds, bait fish, jumping salmon, lots of bites and we ended up with 3, lost another in a handoff, had to throw two back, lost another one that broke 40 lb mono leader line. Skook, where do I send the check? I owe you dude! Bob Rees said river was slow, he ended up with 2 chinook 4 bites, one guide got 10, most got zero. We tried river for a while, 87 million fish on the sonar and not one more in the boat by the end of a pass.
