Default Wenaha Archery Hunt

I drew the Wenaha Archery Tag this year. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to hang an elk in cold storage nearby. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Good on you ... how many pts did it take ?

As far as hanging meat - the last I knew was the grocer in Elgin - was $5 per day. There used to be a store around the hatchery but the last I saw they closed when the hunting pressure dropped...

I have hunted it for many years and drew the bull tag in 1996 ... haven't gone in the last few years but can give you some ideas on where to go and when. That year we bugled up 17 bulls in 3 days --peak rut A 342 went home with us but I missed much bigger. They have been whacking some cats out of there .. the more the merrier I say.

Given that it is pretty much a 1 time shot I would strongly consider hiring a guide and packing down to the bottom. The law watches that hunt pretty closely .. in years past (when you could take cows) there was a lot of party hunting on those bull tags.

It took eleven years and points. My buddy use to hunt there years ago before the change. He will have 12 points next year, so we will probably be going again. Thanks for the info about Elgin. I was thinking there might be some place there to hang meat. I'll have to stop and check when we pass through there. Could you pm me on some good hunting spots.

Elgin store is where we always went.

Arlie: It a moving target. Based on this years #'s of hunters you'll only have to wait 20 more years until you have a reasonable chance of drawing this tag. 400+ people have more points than you and they only give out 20 tags a year. It could have been worse. They used to only give out 10 tags.

Regards and best of luck,

Congrats on the draw Wapitiman I was fortunate to have cut my elk hunting teeth in the middle of that wilderness back in my mid-teens; uncle had horses, and we would pack smack-dab in the middle of all that glorious country Of course, we weren't the only one's with horses back then....opening morning was a war zone The management change has obviously helped accomplish the goal of more mature bulls, but it appears that the remainder of the herd is suffering. I guess what I am saying is make sure you have a couple of predator tags in your pocket

Make sure you take LOTS of pics, and get back to us

Good luck,

Ras
