Large Halibut caught off Newport
Heard rumor a 150 pound plus halibut was caught off Newport this last opener. Anyone know if that was fact or fiction and where it was caught.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
If-- a 150lbder was caught and weighed in, the local newpaper should have a story on it. I haven't heard nothing!
Would be one heck of a fish.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
Myself and two friends went out last weekend with Yakina Bay Charters out of Newport. The Capt. told us that largest they'd heard was 115 lbs. and a couple at 105. My friend ended up boating a 68 pounder. He was pretty happy about that one.

Nice fish. I just wonder if the scales were right. Seems to be a little heavy for a 63" fish.

Re: Well that answers my question
Nice fish! I too question the accuracy of the scale, the 65 1/2"(measured by fish checker) we got last year weighted just over #130 bled out on the newport marina scale.

Re: Well that answers my question
There was a story in yesterday's (?) Newport paper. Looked like a charter. The story said he had to weigh it at the plant next door because their scale wasn't big enough.
Don't know where they caught it.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
I'd say that seems a little heavy too but since it was weighed at the fish plant next door I'd have to trust their scales because they have to be certified.
Maybe everyone else's fish were weighed too light?

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
IPHC length weight conversion puts live weight at 127.5
Nice fish anyway, and a pretty good lift for the pic. 5'3" fish, even bent like that, makes that guy about 6'5.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
The guy is holding it up higher then you would think he could if it was a 150# fish.Try picking up 150# like that sometime.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
The length weight chart is an average. Its not exact. Some fish will be heavier and some will be lighter. Don't worry guys there is still a big one out there for you. Give the guy that caught it a pat on the back.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
When we braught the Halibut in the fish checker measured the fish to the middle of the tail not to the outside of the tail. The halibut was full of eggs too. We caught it 32 miles off shore I think we were at the chicken ranch. I have to tip my hat to Capt. Dave of the Enterprise he had us in good sized halibut and it did not ake long to get are limit. To weight that halibut the deck hand an I and anouther guy paked it up the stairs and through the Tradewinds office to the fish processing plant next door and it weighed in on their scales at 153 pounds. All I know is it was one heck of a halibut one I will rember for the rest of my life.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
Very nice fish, you should be proud. That is one heck of a lift. The biggest I have tried to heave was just over 90 pounds, and I cried for mama after holding up it for about 15 seconds.

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
Excellent Fish!!!!!! Although it's been a couple of years I have also fished several times for Halibut with Captain Dave on the Enterprise in the past & would recommend..... this is a larger charter boat that handles rough weather reasonably well!!!!

Re: Large Halibut caught off Newport
Any way you slice it that is a great fish for the Oregon Coast Folks. We can debate the weight all day long but the fact is, WOW! And I was struggling with my 55 incher Saturday. Not even close to that big gal.
