sound suppressor help?
Just wondering if anyone has built one? Have most of components together for my backyard range. Picked up a 9' x 30" plastic culvert. Do I need baffles? Can I cut the length down. Any help appreciated.

Make sure you get a atf permit before you build one,as no joking around min 15 years in prision.I have several and the hoops i went through to get the permits is unreal.pictures, hand, and fingerprints.ect.I have forms i need to have with the suppressor at all times or I go to jail.

I think we're talking about a stationary culvert that he's shooting through, not something attached to the gun. I don't believe you need a permit for that, but I wouldn't bet jail time on it.

Just fill a two liter pop bottle w/shreaded news paper and duck it to the barrel. the old school brooklyn baffell. Do not try this at home it should only be preformed by certified wise guy or serious injury could occure. and yes it is higly illegal.

I haven't built one but I've heard of people using old truck or tractor tires inside as baffles.

Re: sound suppressor help?
Shooting Times had a great article written by Rick Jamison a few years ago about set-ups like this. He used 55 gal drums for his creations. 1 for the smaller calibers and 2 placed end-to-end for the magnums with baffles in the drums. If you are worried about legality give the PDX ATF office a call and ask them yourself. I have talked to them regarding other issues and they were nice to me.
You can end up with some of the over-pressure coming back and hitting you in the face if you make the holes too small. I speak from experience on this one. The most effective one that I have seen had tires that just fit into the drum as baffles and ~10" holes in each end of the drum. I also shot through a couple with plywood baffles at the two reinforcing ridges that worked too (one of these was the back blast nightmare until attacked with a sawzall ).
Nothing beats the real thing though. Once you buy your first can you will buy one for all the calibers you shoot. ETA - Sorry I just noticed that you are in WA. No real cans for you.

You are correct about the Oregon / Washington laws but the BATF does not issue permits for suppressors. After running an FBI check on you, the Internal Revenue Service gives you a tax stamp which authorizes posession of the device. I was surprised when I got mine that there is actually a lick and stick postage type stamp for $200 on the paperwork.

Re: sound suppressor help?
I have built many suppressors, mostly for the HK MP 5A. 9MM. It is hard to silence a bullet that breaks the sound barrier. such as a rifle round.

That is exactly what I have in mind. Not interested in dealing with the barrel mounted type. Just trying the keep the peace with the neighbors, not that they mind
Appreciate all the info. Guess I will check into the legalities, but can't imagine why it would be a problem for a stationary shooting range.

Re: sound suppressor help?
As I rememeber, Four Corners Rod & Gun club in East Salem had built some of these to quiet down the report of large caliber rifles. It seems like they used tires to quiet them down. I'd try to contact them @ 503-581-5214.
