Big Thank You to the Salty Dogs from a Newbie
First let me introduce myself, my name is Shane I live in sunny Central Oregon, but live to be in the salt. As my username suggests I like to catch all fish, big or small I do not discriminate. This year my brother purchased a 22' Seasport. This was big upgrade from the 21' jet sled we had been fishing from. Now feeling a little more seaworthy, we wanted to go for tuna. I signed up for ifish, and as some of you suggested I listened for awhile and tried to soak up all the great info on this board.
I want to thank all of you for the knowledge you share and I look forward to being part of it. I want to give a special thanks to Pilar without your tuna rigging posts I couldn't have done it.
My newbie story:
At 9:00am on August 8, 2006 four clueless tuna newbies crossed the Coquille River Bar. At 10:30am they dropped the gear in the water. Five minutes later fish-on and another for a double. Many more doubles during the day!!! At 4:00pm four still clueless, but tuna newbies no more crossed the Coquille R Bar with 15 in the box.
Thank You Salty Dogs couldn't have done it without you

That's what it's all about! Congrats on the fish - and congrats on finding this site. Ain't it great!
So now tell us the rest of the story:
What were you using?
How many lines?
How far back?
What were the hot coordinates?
And last but not least - how did you take care of your fish? (virgins sometimes catch 'em before they know how to cark 'em. Ask BOE, EDSR, and BeerWaggon )

Re: Big Thank You to the Salty Dogs from a Newbie
We were using TCF200 Jerry Garcia's in the morning and TCF200 pro dolphins (yellow/green)and zuchinni zukers in the afternoon. Ran 3 handlines two at 60' and 1 at 45' on a yozuri 9.0 diver ran 3 rods 15-25 feet behind handlines. Had a cedar plug on the handline with the diver (no hits apparently a bad choice?) Coordinates 43.2 and 125.04.
And Skein, the still clueless part, well that was about the carking. Day prior watched a charter come in with seventy we watched the guy cleaning them. Watching and doing are two different things. Sure wish I had his number.

Nice. Glad you got enough info to get your boat rigged. Carking is better with practice. My guess is you're hooked now and so you will get some practice. I've heard that not everyone likes TUNA! fishing but that is contrary to my experience. I've sent some otherwise sensible people with strong character right over the edge with just one trip.
Twelve steps for those in need, thanks to Corrirod.

Consulting the 12 steps to recovery .. I have some doubts about number 4 on the twelve step plan.
Tunaholic 12 Step Program
Tunaholic Serenity Prayer:
”God grant me the serenity to accept the fact I cannot go out for tuna today, the courage to live another day without tuna, and the wisdom to know they will come again.”
12 Steps To Recovery
1) Put the poles down and slowly back away.
2) Stop hiding lures in various places thru out the house.
3) Never mistakenly call your spouse "Tuna" during lovemaking.
4) As hard as it is to believe, not everyone enjoys tuna fishing.
5) Selling your car in order to buy more gas to go tuna fishing is not recommended.
6) There are other fish in the sea, I think .
7) Leaving work daily to get home and accept packages from UPS/FedX is wrong.
8) No more telling your spouse the truck broke down while you were out fishing so you'll have to stay another day, or in extreme cases a week.
9) If extreme withdrawals have set in, for instance random "hook setting" while at work or home, or making the zzzzzzzzzzzz sound constantly, do not let the tunaholic near any fishing articles like magazines, fishing gear, or boats as that will make matters worse.
10) Tuna fishing is not a replacement for eating.
11) Unlike AA, recovery should be made away from other tunaholics. Gathering tunaholics will only create more problems.
12) It is not acceptable to miss your child's birth because you were out tuna fishing. (My wife told me that one)
>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>><<<<<<<<<&l t;<<<<<<<<<<<< <<<<<<<<<
Nothing really prepares you for your first TUNA! disaster. And nothing really works as a substitute. At least heroin addicts have methadone.
I'm gonna update that tech post soon. Been learning since I wrote the last one and it is time for an upload.
BTW all those different colors and types of gear work. But not everyday. The only thing I've found that works pretty consistent is the TCF100 clone in zucchinni. It works almost every time. But the rest of it will work someday.
How many colors can a TUNA! see anyway>? Are all those colors for the fish or the fisherman?

You've sent at least one, probably more, over the edge with just a few hits of canned TUNA! you've givin' to unsuspecting but trusting bystanders.

Ya think???!!! I think you have darn near corrupted people on this board and cost many of us thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thanks a lot John. Or should I say Lord Vadar?
