They were mixed (some completely ripe and some not quite) on the same plant last weekend. I'd say by this weekend they should all be plenty ripe. I was at about 4500' on the upper clack..

They be thick over here, best picking for me has been above 5000ft level. I used to pick em' on the road to Bonnie Meadows(Mt. Hood NF) when I was on the West side.

TIP-don't pick em' near any tree that is spraying sap. Ugh! Nasty!

Sunday, picked a good batch at the 3500' level also. Looks like it's gonna be a good year, just coming on strong.

was up at lost lake on mt hood last sunday...easy pickens, as your just about at the paybooth for the lake there is a road that goes right with a sign on a gate says road closed park right there. could pick right out the window of my truck. for some reason no berries till your at the elevation of the lake but they are all over the place there. anyone got a good recipe(proven) for huckleberry pie? oh and if you do go bring insect repellant, bugs weren`t too bad cept for these pesky biting little flys. happy picking`s....

Were those Huckleberries at Trapper Creek campground? I noticed the bushes were loaded all around the campground and would like to go back and pick some.

Anyone have a pic of huckleberry bushes?

Aren't there other berries to pick in the Cascades too?

Thanks,

Gregg

Hey Gregg, how was the fishing up there? I don't have any pictures to post, but there are a lot of huckleberries in Trapper Creek campground. Huckleberries are usually taller than the salal up there with smaller leaves and lighter blue berries.

Here's a pic of some berries. There's several kinds of huckleberries. The most common are the little blueish ones with a hazy coating on them. These are shiny and bigger with a maroon color with a larger leaf. I've always called these timber berries.

Been out last two weekends above Carson. Limited out. Doubt they will last another week. Was a nice crop this year.

OK, that shoots the idea of waiting until my vacation time! :frown:

Anyone have any suggestions on places for me to go close to the McMinnville area here to take the family?? Also a good site to help us correctly identify the berries! I've never been out picking them before, but have had some delicious dishes made with them.

go up on mt hebo. Very large berries up there and millions of plants. Look for the red ones. not the blue. Just drive the 14 rd from the top of mt hebo down to south lake.

Munched some dandys up near hood the other day on a bowhunt....The deer had been eating and from what I tasted I can see why..Plump and juicy and ripe.......If only I had not been so intent on getting to antoher area to sit before sunset..

I tell you whats good if you can find them is the mountain wild raspberrys...Have to find em before the bears do though or they get munched fast. Best berry I have eatin on a hunt....

I once found an acre parcel above Northfork Res. that had wild raspberry, huckleberry, and wild blueberry all in one area. The local bears had realy been working them at night, can you imagine why? lol...thats like a box of fruity pebbles to a bear...

We tried picking some between Goose Lake and Carson this weekend. The season looked pretty much over. We had 5 adults and an 8 year old picking and we got maybe a cup to cup and a half in 40 minutes or so. We talked to a friend of my mother inlaws in Trout Lake, and he said the season started early this year.

My wife and I picked just shy of our allotment of 6 gallons this year. It was better picking 2 weeks ago, but we were able to find many berries over the Labor Day weekend as well. The commercial pickers have been out in full force since August 15 so anything with easy access and close to the roads were cleaned up thoroughly for the most part. I would add that the berries we picked this past weekend were more ripe, but were larger overall. Many of the areas we saw over the weekend had received some early season frosts as well as the leaves were falling off the bushes with ease. We have added many new hotspots to our list during this Huckleberry season.

I have taken a vow not to reveal any of our "spots". There is nothing that will make me tell.

Spent the weekend down around Florence. Found lots of berries east of Honeyman State Park. Even munched a few while glassing clear cuts for bears.
