My boy tuna fishes
Momma wasnt sure her little boy (Jack) was going tuna fishing. She has seen pics of the blood, she has heard tales of rough seas, news reports of the occasional boat going down None of this coincides with the vision she has her for little boy.
When mommas little "man" got home last night, I saw her checking him over to see if he was still in one piece.
I am happy to report my boy is a tuna fisherman. I have grown inpatient waiting for a nice day to get him out. The 1 and 5 forecast seemed like the opportunity. The big morning outgoing tide I have fretted on for several days was just paying interest on a debt I didnt owe. The bar was flat as a pancake, we dropped 4 crab pots and headed west at about 28 knots on a beautiful ocean.
I wasnt sure if Jack would make it all day, and didnt want to invite somebody and be forced into coming home early. I had only my brother in law along for the trip, so the 3 of us start to fish. All the boats around us are killing fish, and we spend an hour looking for a biter.
Then it started and we stuck to a little patch of water and continued to hook and loose fish. We ended the day with 14 fish in the boat, but we lost maybe almost twice that number. I have never done a zero from a quad or a triple hook up We had a stretch of 3 for 14 fish in the middle of the day. Nothing would go our way, we spent a fair amount of time knitting sweaters, afgans, pot holders and at one point a complete comforter complete with blue cord highlights. I dont think any of my rods have any top shots left on them.
We cut back on the amount of gear in the water from normal and it didnt seem to help. The wind picked up and it got quite sporty.
The bite had really picked up later in the morning/early afternoon. It didnt take long to hook fish, and when we got a single I started just stopping the boat, as multiples were just to big a hassle.
There are so many fish out of Garibaldi its like a fish farm, I would sure like to have a nice day to go plug the boat again. All the boats started heading in around 1 pm as that 1 and 5 turned into probably a 4 and 5
At 10 to 12 knots we headed home, which took us almost 3 hours to get in, I was sure glad to see the better water inside so we could make some speed.
The 4 crab pots yielded 36 XXXX-large crab, some nice some fairly soft but they will eat.
Jack working over a tuna, with a little level wind help from his uncle
The first two fish to the boat
I look forward to many more days with my boy at sea.

And that is what is it all about Roy. Is he hooked yet? Yes it was sporty out there. More than sporty off the CR yesterday for sure but still great to get out there.

Re: My boy tuna fishes
Hey, Jack! It looks as if there's nothing you can't do! Good job on the tuna. They fight pretty hard, don't they.
I figure it won't be long until you'll be driving the boat and deciding where to put the rigs out, then calling in the rest of the Salty Dogs when you find a hot bite.
Congrats!

Re: My boy tuna fishes
Nice going, BOE, I was just wondering where you fished since I most often go out of Garibaldi. Last week when I was there, we found all our fish in a small circle around
45.43 x 124.53. Just trying to check up on where they have moved to, or maybe they are just all over the place. Thanks.

Good job Jack I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Roy isn't it
great to teach them the things we love to do. My boys are
all grown but some of the best time spent together was on
the water. I still enjoy fishing with them when we get a
chance.

What a great way to get hooked on tuners for life! Jack did a tremendous job onboard on a less-than-stellar day. He was one tired Salty Pup when he got home, but you couldn't wipe the grin off his face!

Re: My boy tuna fishes
Way to go Salty Dad.
I suffered through a trip like that when I was 8. One fine day out of Marathon with my Dad. It was a little rough and I felt the sea sick for the first time. Then we started catching fish and everything changed. First saltwater fish was a dorado and I don't think I will ever forget it.
Jack will remember that you were the guy who showed him the promised land. Quite possibly he will remember it forever.
The smile tells the whole story.

Would make a good fish of the week on a Monday...can someone send it to me in high rez? Next Monday's is picked.
(In the business, by the way, we call that a "fish-comma-right" shot).
Great idea...thanks (we can always crop from the top)

Is that cool or what? That boy is gonna be a stud tuna killer. It was a 3 hr tour back from the tuna grounds on a lumpy ocean and Jack was still smiling at the cleaning station. Neat trick on the tuna cleaning too, thanks Roy.

Nice going catching your first tuna. Hope you had a great time so now you can start dreaming of your next adventure. Now give your Dad a big hug for taking you fishing and then give your Mom a big hug for letting you go!
Very nice Roy, you can see it by the pictures, you provided your young man a wonderful day to remember, a day to cherish forever.

Re: My boy tuna fishes
Way to go . I know the proud feeling you get as a dad, watching your kid reel in his first tuna. My son caught his first tuna out of the CR on Tuesday, and he is still grinning ear to ear, maybe not as much as Dad, but close. He was a little older, just turned 16, but it was still memorable. Time well spent. Way to go Jack and Roy .
