Default Know a good non-toxic knife oil?

Even my good, stainless benchmade knives rust a little when coast-range hunting. And I use'em for everything, including preparing my meals. A lot of the good gun oils and reel oils say "Harmful or Fatal if Swallowed."

Are there any good non-toxic oils to keep on the knife in the field? Stuff that holds up well and doesn't dry out?

Preciate'cher help.

Any kind of vegetable oil will work.

Ballistol was designed for what you are requesting. You can use it on your firearms too. The Japanese use Camelia Oil for carbon steels.

i like stained/rusty knives. never put anything on them but dish soap to cut the game fat, while cooking them on the stove. to clean them after the season i sometimes clean them with 0000 steelwool soaked with wd40 or gunoil

I've never paid it any mind. I wash my knives too before I put them away. But the pant leg works just as good.

But I suppose that cooking oil would do fine.
But spit isn't toxic and is more readily avalible in the field!
