New Boat Dilema
I bought a new Thunderjet Envoy last month. Nice boat but I don't think it's the boat for me! I'm thinking about putting up for sale or trade. oh what to do? I know I'll take a loss either way but if it's not the right boat it's not the right boat. Any help or suggestions would be much apreciated.
thanks, Dave

Re: New Boat Dilema
I dont think anyone ever knows what boat they really want until their second boat but a month or so old is pretty fast for a change... If you are lucky enough take some rides in other peoples boats and see what you like and dont like about them and go from there.

Re: New Boat Dilema
Fishnaked; did you get the sportjet or an outboard? Have you ever owned a jet boat before?Sounds like you are having a bad case of buyers remorse. Before you do anything you might regret e-mail me.I own a T-jet Luxor sportjet and really love it.Every guy that has fished with me without exception has commented on what a great boat it is.Maybe you just need some help rigging it so that it is the boat you want. You can fish for many different species of fish with that boat and waterski or tube the kids.Let me know if I can help you out?Be glad to do an on the water with you.By the way this is my third jet boat so I do have some experience.

Besides saying what do you don't like about this boat. Tell us why you want the other one. We may be able to convince you that the other boat is just as bad. In other words, no boat is perfect.

Re: New Boat Dilema
Downtime: thank-you for the offer, that is some of the same reasoning I used to buy this boat, & it is a 175 sportjet.
Jimh: I'm thinking I really want an open sled w/tiller, had one ordered but it wasn't ment to be.

Re: New Boat Dilema
Fishnaked,
A boat like you have is only a dream of mine. Sorry you do not like it. I like reading these posts because I learn a lot from other people. I know a guy who has a T-Jet and man is it nice, but I also like the open sleds as well.
You may not like them or you may. Do a search on "Pacific Skiff" The are built as an all around aluminum boat and are designed to go on any type of water. They are vertually unsinkable with a one piece bottom. When it comes to that time I am seriously considering getting one and adding my own stuff to fit me.
Thanks for the post. I know a couple of people who get new boats and the next thing I know "well I am thinking about selling my boat and getting a better one" You are fishing top of the line.
Good luck!

Re: New Boat Dilema
Just a couple of reason why you don't want an open boat. I hope this helps.
Open boats aren’t really very safe for a number of reasons. You mostly have to stand up while you steer them. If you hit anything or take evasive maneuvers, you may be out of the boat. You can’t see as well to avoid problems because you are in the back of the boat. Waves can easily go over the bow. If you are driving the boat and it starts raining, the rain will interfere with your vision.
Open boats aren’t very comfortable. You get much colder and wetter in an open sled since you are exposed to the elements. Anytime it rains, all of your equipment gets wet. When dew falls, all of your equipment gets wet.

Re: New Boat Dilema
Thanks for all words.
Green I mostly fish salmon (spring & fall),sturgon and crab. Used to fish off shore, but I sold that boat too (20'trophy).
Jimh: I do realize about weather and operation. Mine wuold have a top that I could see over as most of mu fishing is at anchor, and a very short run from the boat ramp & home.

Re: New Boat Dilema
Give your new boat a bit more time. If your having trouble going out on your own look around for gagets that can help. for instance, if anchoring is a problem get a roller set up. There is a learning curve for all new equipment. You may in the end learn that a differnt design is better for you. good luck

Re: New Boat Dilema
Yea, now I'm confused. Open boats make fishing easier for multiple rods in the water especially trolling. Yet you're concerned with fishing by yourself and you mostly fish on anchor.

Re: New Boat Dilema
My advice would be to fish the boat at least through springer season. You two need to get to know one another better before you decide to trade her in.
There are tricks to fishing/launching by yourself. Of course, while you learn, there is no reason to fish alone unless you prefer it. Post an invitation for an open seat and meet some new fishing partners.
(Then, if you decide to sell, just pick a couple of those guys and let them captain the boat a few times.....then mention you are selling her worth the money....ifisher on!)

Re: New Boat Dilema
Fishnaked 1 month and your ready to give up on her?. Take Downtime up on his offer. I have an open sled and wouldn't have it anyother way, but downs boat is nice. Even if it does have a windshield...( girlie boat)

FN, is it the 19' that was under 20k? I was looking at these also. I still think this is the boat for me.

Re: New Boat Dilema
I bought an Alumaweld Intruder 18' w/175SJ.
I have gone through several periods when I was certain that I had made a mistake.
Part of the fun of owning your boat is making changes that will correct some of your misgivings.
So far I have added bow and side rails so that I can get on the bow and clamber around without falling off. I found a capstan winch and mounted it on the bow for an anchor winch that I can handle myself. I didn't like the noise of the SJ so I encased the housing in foam to see if it would help - it did so I will have a new slightly larger box made so I can put the foam on the inside. I found a reasonable remote steering system for my kicker that I'm in the process of installing. Last week I had a front mounted reciever put on my rig so that I can just drive the boat down the launch instead of backing it. I am going to replace the handwinch on the trailer with an electric one. I'm going to have a walkway installed alongside the trailer. And so etc. etc.
I guess what I'm saying is if you can't find the boat you want make it the way you want it.
How does the song go -- "if you can't have the one you love, love the one your with."

Re: New Boat Dilema
I'm on my third boat in the last five years... yes I have a very understanding wife! thanks goodness!
I went from a 18' Alumaswled to a 22' Willie Predator to a 24" North River Commander. "last boat I promise honey.. I promise"
When I started the boat buying process five years ago I thought I would fish a certin fishery much more that I did.
SO I bought a "perfect" tide water boat... and then I found myself limited on where I coule fish for springers.. my passion!
So I bought another boat..... bottom line is that not every boat is going to be prefect for every fishery!
I have one that fits my needs as of right now.
we'll see what the next years bring!
life is short,
Buy another BOAT

Re: New Boat Dilema
I will say tha the last new boat cost me a trip to Cabo...
".....there's a sleepy town, you go there once, you'll be there twice... white sands sure make a tan look nice.. you can crash on the beach..." "Cabo Wabo.. is alright by me.... place comes alive every night... I want to crach n the beach..." VH
yes
the little lady wants to go back to Cabo...
I guess it's the least I can do before the 2005 springer season

Re: New Boat Dilema
My boat works for most things that I like to do. I still kid my wife that I would like to have a couple more boats. I really would like a boat to go off shore in and a smaller boat to mess around in the small trout ponds.
I have heard it on the board before. There is no such thing as a perfect boat. Maybe you could pull off the multiple boat thing.
Good luck

Re: New Boat Dilema
Seems to be an awfull lot of unsafe guides taking their clients lives in their hands by fishing them from open boats........(the most versatile fishing machines on the water).....any boat is only as safe as it's user. Open boats are commonly referred to as "guide models"....because of their fishability. Get what you are comfortable in and enjoy yourself. RUss

Re: New Boat Dilema
Boy, I sure wouldn't do anything until I was real sure I knew what the problem was I was trying to solve. I heard trailering issues ,and single man handling issues, which are real for any boat over 14 feet. I'm not sure that moving further away from the anchor (by going to a tiller motor) is going to solve much for you.
I have a 19 foot NR Sportster, besically the same as yours, and have had to work through a bunch of things in order to be able to fish by myself when needed. The biggest issue is the launch - You need to be able to safely park the boat somehow, or you're into a two man show. Changing boats won't change that.
However, while any 19 ft boat is getting big enough to be unwieldy, I have found the package to be eminently managable once I got it set up. So maybe we ought to talk a bit about the particular issues your having, and see if we can't figure out how other people solve those.
I had an open sled before this one, and for a pure fishing machine, it was better, for things like trolling and drift jigging for walleye. But if you are fishing off the anchor mostly, for salmon and steelhead, what you have is about as good as it gets. So, talk to us, Goose...

Re: New Boat Dilema
Sounds like you need more than 1 boat. Keep this one and get tiller open sled too, by the time you get 3 or 4 stacking up around the house you will probably be able to narrow it down to 1 or 2 keepers.
