My name is Michael McAlpine and I wrote this message.

This is just an FYI to anyone who might consider booking a tuna charter with Newport Tradewinds.

I went out with them 2 years ago on the Blitz and had a great time. Caught a few tuna, Capt. Stowe and Dean made it a great trip. So good that since then I have been trying to get onto an 18 hr. trip.

Last year my wife gave me a gift of an 18 hr. trip for Christmas. I called and booked a seat. 2 days before the trip I was told they had overbooked and I was out. okay that happens, rescheduled. 2 days before the next trip, they call - oh, we didn't have a second captain, can't run the boat, do you want to go halibut fishing? (Halibut instead of Tuna, no thanks) by the way that was the last 18 hr for the year. bummed, but figured there is always next year.

So, call them and book an 18 hr. trip for the 8/12. With all the killer tuna reports getting very excited to do an 18hr trip. A friend calls in joins the charter a few days later. He is told - no problem, you have a seat.

Get a call this morning from Newport Tradewinds. Oh sorry, we double booked the entire boat. We have a spot on 8/26.... (great right in the middle of Bouy 10)

once, "okay", twice "what is up with these people", three times - "give me my money back"

this is my report. hope others who work with Newport Tradewinds have better luck then I have.

It's about time they gave you the first seat and don't bounce you from the trip. I assume you told them they bounced you before, I sure hope they aren't doing this 'cause they already have your $!

I have gone out with tradewinds in the past, but I learned my own lesson from that trip..

Hope they do what is right and take care of you...

perhaps, but they should put a disclaimer that they only fish with kool-aide drinkers!

Only thing they had to say, was sorry. we will refund your money.

Red your gift certificate. sounds like they are reserving the right to take others before you for some reason. I would be IRRATE.

I have only been with them a couple of times out of Depoe Bay and had good experience. that was just bottom fihing though and I stopped that when the limits went down to 5 each.

Hey Mike, Call Em up. advise them they made this contract and you paid for in advance to recieve this tuna trip. And since they have bumped you off, demand a full refund. If they refuse, Contact the Lacal DA's office and file a complaint of Fraud against them. You are not the first one I have heard of being done this way.
They took the money and promised a service in which they have failed to perform.
Don't let em off the hook!

At this time I can only hope they can accomplish the simple task of refunding my money. (despite the fact that they can't manage the simple task of keeping a list of 14 names scheduled on a boat)

according to the NT web site the increase is only $5.00.
When I booked the trip they asked how much the gift was for, I didn't have the ticket with me when I called, and I told them that but they did not say anything more about it.

ie. nothing about "oh the rates have gone up..."

the only thing they told me was "you have a seat."

When I have a situation like this, I've been known to write a polite, brief, and concise letter to the Oregon Dept. of Justice, Consumer Protection Section. In this particular incident, I'd send a copy of the letter to the Better Business Bureau, the Newport Chamber of Commerce, any Charter Boat Association, and the business itself.

I've found a letter of this sort really gets the businesses attention, and alerts others that there may be a problem. You may be the only one who has been "victimized", but probably not. Plus, you may prevent others from the frustration you've encountered.

However, I might wait a few days and get my money in hand first. If the money does not arrive, you, and the DOJ, have a stronger case.

You did a good job by contacting this board there is a lot of poeple that monitor this board, and if there is a problem with Tradewinds we need to know, but I have fished with them for 20 Years, mostly from there aft deck, hope this is just a problem at the front desk and not a situation that will make a black eye for them............Let us know how it comes out..........Ray

I have an idea lets break a business because a few people have issues. We all know whatever comes cross the web is the truth. Give me a break. If you don't get your money back make a post. If not, there are bumbs in the road.
