Central Oregon streams??
Hi-
I am planning on being in central Oregon on friday between Bend and Maupin. I have the whole day to kill and I am wondering about streams to fish (Deschuttes, Crooked, etc.) that will be productive for trout and easy to get to. Most of my fly-fishing experience is on still water and I suppose I am a river/stream rookie . Any tips on techniques, flies, locations, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Rosco

The 7 miles of the Crooked River below Prineville Reservoir would be my recomendation, it's a good stream to start on and has easy access and willing fish and I heard it's been improving lately.

This time of year, especialy morning and evening, beware of the rattlers. One of the healthiest populations I have experienced.

Re: Central Oregon streams??
if you're in maupin fish the deschutes...near town is excellent fishing.
stop in at the deschutes angler, spend $10 on flies and they will set you up.
If you wanna listen to us then take some x-caddis, elk hair caddis, LARGE PED'S and a few nymphs...hares ear, copper johns etc.
dont expect to catch a ton of fish...especially on your first trip. Look along the edges and fish the foam.'

Re: Central Oregon streams??
I would hesitate to spend time on the Crooked this season.
Fishing is off, the algae's in bloom (big time). Although, this may be a bit brighter with the temps coming down...
I'd hit the middle DesChutes before the a trek out to the Crooked.
Later,
Peter

Re: Central Oregon streams??
I agree w/ Mandinga...I had a great time fishing size 14 olive ehc and size 16 olive caddis emergers...the emerger got the most fish. Most memorable fish would have to be the 16" redside that slowly came up from the depths and missed my emerger and then next cast shot to the surface and hammered the ehc in broad daylight. Those fish are crazy strong!

Re: Central Oregon streams??
Sounds great guys!! As I said, when it comes to rivers, I am a relative beginner. Any thoughts on presentation or technique? Thanks again! I need all the advice I can get

Re: Central Oregon streams??
last saturday the fish were all over midges, and midge pupa. Look in the backeddies in the afternoon. We found fish rising all day, although it's unusual.

Re: Central Oregon streams??
Don't be too discouraged on the D. Its a big river and can be hard to read until you've had some success there or had someone show you. Scott Richmonds book fishing the D helped me out quite a bit. You might pickup a copy and look at the diagrams on fishing back eddies. Lots of good information on where the fish setup in a back eddy.
I did better on the Crooked because its smaller and easier to understand where the fish might be. Lots less intimidating wading too. BUT, I've never tried fishing it in the late summer, so the issue of algae might just make this a moot recomendation.
Good luck. Looking forward to your report.

Re: Central Oregon streams??
Rosco, if you are fishing the D have some caddis puppa's #16 tan with you as they have been hitting them hard this week, Olive X-Caddis #18 have been working well on top, enjoy the river, tight lines, brian

Re: Central Oregon streams??
Another spot that is worth a try is the Little Deschutes. Small water and doesn't get a lot of pressure.
