Default So what changes in life did you make at 50 yrs old

I have been slowly, like a rocket, moving in on 50 yrs. old. Strange how 1 birthday make you think about mortality more than others. With only 2 days of my youthful 40s where I just thought every part of my body has broken down it gets worse. Now I'll get the doctors special 50s tests , like their 40s test weren't bad enough but hey what is life without experiencing the good and the bad. Which brings me back to the topic. I have been a smoker for 20 yrs. of which I enjoy and hate at the same time 'cause it is bad for you. Besides if I just live as long as half my aunts and uncle, who surpisingly all the smokers have passed away and most of the non-smokers are still alive and in their late 80s to mid 90s. So this is my promise to myself before all of ifish (my stupid humor just kills me) as of my birthday I will not be a smoker.

So what about the rest of you that have passed the 50 mark what changes did you make.

As for you youngsters  remember this: my daddy told me at 14, when I wanted to drive so bad, he said first you can't wait to be 16 then it is 21 and then.....

you turn around and your 40. he was right. man must be einstein and i hope one day to be as smart as he is.

Well, if you would like to see age 60, quitting smoking would be a peachy idea. Lung cancer seems to strike most often in the 50s. Add to that the fact that your chance of lung cancer declines fairly quickly within a few years of quitting, and you can see that you are running out of time, statistically speaking.

It's also a great idea to get your weight into line, once and for all. For most folks that means a daily program of exercise. Even walking.

Imagine this --- a 200 pound guy walking about an hour (at a brisk 4 miles an hour) burns off about 350 calories. If you do that five days a week, 50 weeks a year, that's 87,500 calories burned a year. At an average of 3,600 calories per pound, that is a loss of about 24 pounds a year. All with no dieting. Combine a reasonable high protein diet and you can easily reduce your weight by 40 pounds in the next year. I took off 62 pounds, and have kept about 40 of that off for the last 6 years through a simple program of walking 5 days a week.

The key for an exercise program is to make it habitual. Each morning after a cup of coffee I take two newspapers in hand and drive about a mile to the club. There I get on a treadmill, set it at a comfortable pace, and read the two newspapers, increasing the speed a bit whenever I comfortably can. After the newspapers are read, I have burned about 350 calories. No hard work, no discipline, really not much sweat.

That's all there is to it. Other than a complete physical.

And don't forget the colonoscopy.

"So what about the rest of you that have passed the 50 mark what changes did you make?"

Get into the habit of keeping a notebook/pen in your pocket, to make notes to yourself, so when you find yourself wandering around in the garage, trying to remember what you went to get, you can look at your notebook and figure out what it was.

Note: Be sure to keep it in the same pocket, so you don't forget where you put it.

50 wow, THANK GOD I quit smoking at 44, toughest thing I ever did and the rewards are well worth it, GOOD time to STOP is any time. wasn't till mid 50s health issues smacking me every month, I try and stay active but some days are worst than others, they say you have to be tough to get old, and boy it's the truth.
try and eat healty, slow down liquor, It's OK not to drink, and keep a good spirit. I enjoy my outside life to the fullest even if a no catch day. there is always another day! at 61 Im glad to be at this age!

And don't forget the colonoscopy YES YES YES

I would say that the age thing starts to creep up on you between 50-55. Suddenly you realize that you can only sleep about 5 hours without a potty break. Instead of having little memory lapses, stuff that you remember as soon as you are reminded, now you forget completely. Huh? Never happened....

Old injuries rewaken and new ones appear for no apparent reason ("I slept wrong" is so lame...). My best advice is to be careful and take nothing for granted. Your body will not tell you that it can no longer do the things that you rely on it to do until you are relying on it to DO! A brain and a lever generally work better than an old back and muscles.

Congrats on being smart enough to make it to 50!

I really didn't make any changes.

The one thing I can say is that the old saying that life begins at 50 is correct!!

JVP,

Congrats on your 50th. My 51st was on July 21st (the same day as Ifish's b'day) I decided to get fit, and keep it that way (actually got back into shape when I was 49). I have tried to make it a permanent deal and have been running 6 days a week ever since. My weight, today, is 25 pounds under where I was two years ago, and I am about 5 pounds from what I weighed in high school. I can't tell you when I felt this good last. The other stuff creeps up on you and you just have to adapt and keep moving.

The biggest irritation for me is the reading glasses thing. Wish I could read my watch, get a line through the eye of a hook, etc.

Keep on keeping on.

Mike

Wish I could just spend a little more time with all of them though! But.... 2 and soon to be 3 of them are in Fairbanks, one in Orlando and only one in the immediate neighborhood! I`ll figure some way to get some fishin` lessons in with all of them eventually! I refitted my boat with all new electronic's and up graded from a 2-stroke to 4-stroke with power trim and ele. start. and a propane heater for front and rear. Bimini top and new carpeted floors. One more thing I did get a marine GPS, for those senior moments. Other than that, it was just like any other year...Congratulations on making it

when i turned 50 one and a half years ago, my mother took me to lunch. she had just turned 70. we both ordered candian club whiskey on the rocks and toasted the following.. " we will not take any sh.. from anyone, no more, no how, no way" we agreed to not take life too seriously and to live each day like it was our last. shes a great mom and we have both stayed true to the oath.. i dont let idiots bug me, i dont put up with bosses who are jerks and i try to live a peaceful stress free existance.. i smile a lot, i try to live up to my cub scout oath and do a good deed for someone daily. i also swore to quit smoking cheap cigars, quit drinking cheap beer and whiskey. its first class for me from here on in, my vices are costly but richly earned. i figure i got 20 plus years to go and am going to live them to the fullest.. now if i can just get someone to mow my yards.... joco

That's all good, but when you fall down and smash part of yourself, it isn't like it was when you were young. Don't ask me how I know that!

I actually did most of the changes in my early 40's. Eating better, a little more excercise, yadda yadda.

Now at 51 I still work too hard but I really like what I do, I still fish alot, take 25-35 days off to fish. Got a 38 yr old hot girl friend who I plan to marry in the next year of so, so keeping a smile on her face helps keep me young.

I have learned to spend money on myself and on making my life more enjoyable. This was hard for me after growing up poor and saving money for so many years, but it is a nice change.

I laugh allot, practice ramdom acts of kindness (just makes me feel good), take time out to just sit and enjoy things now and then and for me, the fishing trips have become more about hanging out with special friends and having fun than catching and killing fish. Don't get me wrong, I still catch more than 5 average anglers put together but I just release more now.

Besides, I still refuse to grow up.

Well I had a great birthday. Took my grandsons out fishing for their very first time. We saw antelope(nice little herd with a fine buck), turkey vultures(buzzards I call them and it was like a movie there were about 10 in this big old dead snag), 2 fawns out playing by the reservoir almost ran into us, a scorpion, lizards abound and no women(don't flame me here there were 4 of them just achin' to hedge in on my time with the boys we compromised and took a camera so they could see their first fish trip) . Fishing time probably 20 min. tops and they had enough and lizard hunting took over.

As for making changes they are a one day at a time and going well. I took a ton of grief that day and as soon as I remember who they were I'll get them back. One guy told me he could still whip me a pee wee basketball and I told him I could still out run him in a hundred yard dash but we would have to do it 20 yrds. a day.

I turn 58 tomorrow and other then the regular complaints with joint pains life is good. I can still row my drift boat and ride my dual sport motorcycle fairly well. I get tired more easily and sore arms and legs but you learn to slow down just a bit and that helps. Just wish I could hunt like I used to but a fused ankle put a end to all sidehilling :depressed: and down here there is very little flat ground. They say 50 is the new 40 so enjoy all you can while you can. Pete
