Default Roe for Sturgeon?

I am new to this board and posting in general, so if there is any etiquette to this process that I have not followed properly please let me know?

Last Spring I was out sturgeon fishing using shrimp which is usually productive. On this particular day the fishing was slow except for one boat who was knocking em good. It turned out that he was using salmon roe. I heard that sturgeon do not like cured roe, can anyone confirm this? If this is true, how can you preserve roe to freeze for sturgeon fishing without the eggs popping?

Any wisdom appreciated! {;-)>

Hi MB,

Welcome to the site. I am not sure how they put the eggs up but when I fished the Fraser up in B.C. back in September the guide I went with was using eggs. They were in nylon mesh and I never gave it much thought about how they were cured and since they were very messy they may not have been. Egg sacks like that seemed to be hot up there. I would say put them in mesh and freeze them that is what I plan on trying. And since the big uglies go for smell the sacks will put out a good trail being messy and gooey.

Thanks Outlaw that sounds like a good plan! How large were the baits they used?
I tried taking whole skeines and soaking them in a lite solution of rock salt and borax to get little tougher skin for the freeze. They did not pop but I guess we will just have to wait and see if they fish well too after the thaw.

MB,

The baits were about the size of a 50 cent piece. In the nylon they lasted for a long time so we didn't go though a ton of sacks. Messy, but it was effective.

Hey MB. Yes Yes Yes. Salmon egg good for gators. The netting is called Maline cloth and you buy it at GI JOES. It's red. Cut a rectangle about 4" x 3". Use a gob, golfball size, of your choice of eggs, cured, rotten whatever and put the hook through it. Roll a big fattie with the cloth and tie it into a cylinder with stretchy thread. Find the hook point and poke it through to the outside. I dispose of most of my subprime, old rotten salmon eggs this way.

This has worked well for me when nothing else will. IMHO Cowlitz smelt and WD40 is the stuff. This always works!

The bend is your friend!
