Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Between 1987 and 1995 an Oregon or Washington stream produced a one month steelhead catch of over 10,000.
Which river in which month, did this occur?
The first correct answer wins.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha (evil knowing laugh)

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Hmmm...
Not many rivers have historical annual averages over 10,000, let alone in a single month.
What are the options:
Wilson / January / 19??
Deschutes / August or September / 19??
Cowlitz / January / 19??
Clackamas / February / 19??
Nestucca / January / 19??
Nehalem / January / 19??
Sandy / January / 19??
Final Guess: Wilson/January/1987

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Does this just include coastal streams? What about Columbia River tributaries. The Snake river in 1995 had over 14,000 summer steelhead caught between Sept.-Dec.
The Sandy River had over 9600 the winter of 87-88 and the lower Rogue had over 9400 winter in 1989-90. Give us a hint!

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Cowlitz River: Dec. of 92 or 93
Meant Cowlitz River as in from Dec. of 92 to Jan. of 93 = 8524 + 3689= 12213

If that's not the answer, then here's your hint: It's in Oregon. Here's the URL where I found my info: http://faculty.washington.edu/tgades/Fishing/stlhd.txt

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
I am back. Bill is devising these questions for me, and I have a friend down. An 83 year old man who taught me to fish the Lewis and Clark, amongst other rivers. A man who I have fished with for ages, and I just love him!
Anyway, he is here, and Bill is going to take him down the river! I can't go, because his son is with him and only three in the boat, but I am so excited for Bill to do this for him and me! I had to go down and show them the holes here, but it is too low.
This man loves to fish as much as I do! I have spent countless hours fishing with him. sitting on jetties, walking rivers, plunking the Columbia, trout, jacks, steelies, silvers.... anyway! I am so pleased to get him on the river!
Sooooo. I will get Bill to read this asap and advise. I have the answer, but I am stuck on a problem.
asap!
Everytime I caught a fish with Ben, I would yell, " BEN BEN BEN BEN BEN!"
Hope he catches one!

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Remember, this is for only one month.
Oregon or Washington.
That is what Bill says.
Bill also says....."Nobody has quite won yet."
sorry~
Keep trying!
Will judge answers when he gets back from his trip.

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Now you tell me the exact year. I have the complete river listings and numbers right here in front of me from those years and I surely don't see that figure. Plus, what's up with the BS technicalities? Should post rules to the contest as in the Holdzit contest.

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Let's just say I take Eldon's word for it even though I am at the website Thanks babycakes for telling me the year. Have you used your Loomis yet, or is the water still too low? Cowlitz was pretty much barely over 5,000 cfs as of Saturday, and someone said they fished it on Tues. and had the same scenario. My blind mother caught a silver (her first time to Washington) and I got a cuttie on Saturday so all was not lost. Keep the questions coming since I am loving this "power of the internet" trip. Thaaaaaank yoooooou sooo muuuuch sugar.

Don't feel bad hey-yall, I don't see the numbers either. Must be looking at them wrong, and I have the numbers from the site you looked at, the WDFW numbers and my own records. Oh well.

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
With all due respect to the administrater, I think the correct year was '94. I was still an undergrad @ UW that year and remember fishing Blue Creek everyday during December. My college roommate went back home to Indiana for Christmas with 20 frozen brats in two coolers.
Peace Out....

Re: Contest for Eldon Ladd's Book
Bill says it was 1994. Washingtons catch card year runs May 1 of a given year through April 30th of the next year, unlike Oregons, and admits that he misread this info.
However, the year wasn't a requirement for the contest answer.
The catch for the entire year was and amazing 32,708! pretty awesome, huh?
And Jennie only caught 31,000 of those! Missed a couple.... darn.
