Default Season totals...apology

I have edited this post, so it may not have meaning to some people who did not read the original post.

I posted my feelings on people talking about or posting their yearly total number of fish caught. The post was offensive to some, so I have removed it, and would like to apologize for any bad feelings it may have caused. Shane (5 Cents), Zaq, Bobby (Big & Bright), Brad (UglyGreen), David Johnson, Nick, Foxer, Rubber Boot, Kevin (Bugleman), Chris (TackleBuster) Mrdorkfish and anyone I misssed, please accept my apologies. I know some of you and have always been treated in a fair manner by those I know. It was not my intent to upset any individual. Foxer and Rubber Boot, I don't know you, but I hope you don't judge me by this one post. I just enjoy fishing and IFISH, and this post was a mistake. Again, please accept my apologies.

Troy

Troy...

Right on....I am definately with you on this...I can't tell you how many fish I pesonally caught nor the people who fished in my boat...

And to boot, who in the blue blazen *&^% cares how many fish the Hog Hunter caught...

Its not about stats...Its about family & friends having a good time...

OBTH...lets put together our team for the Derby next Saturday...You, me and whoever else...Hogback is out fishing today and I don't think he wants to do it but I am offically in and you are in my boat bud...We need to go there and just have a good time...I will even let you decide where we should fish...

I will call you Troy.

I hear you Spooled, when and if all the information comes out , how many days fished ,where ,hours ,ect. Its, the old Apples and Oranges thing. I'm glad to catch fish and see people catching fish, not how many.

Troy-

Amen. Some of us get out more or less than others, and when it really comes down to it, at least for me, this is about having fun, not putting numbers on the board.

It's real easy spooled, don't read them. If you dont care, then why bring it up ?? Those of us that don't get a lot of fishing time appreciate the reports etc. I dont mind hearing about how many etc, it just tells me that there still are fish out there.

Gee, I'm sorry if you guys are having a bad day, or week, or month, or a bad life. I really enjoy hearing about who is catching how many fish and seeing the pictures of the catch. I log on to ifish for that reason and to pick up a few tips. Every little bit helps.
If you are having a hard time with it, don't read those posts. Let those of us who enjoy them have a little fun with the sport. Its not life and death you know. Lighten up!

Here, this may help. I went fishing Friday. Everyone around me caught fish. I, on the other hand could not touch a fish. If I would of walked down the seafood isle in Safeway, they would not have sold me a fish. Then the drive back to Salem from Seaside through the snow and ice and slush. Putting up with 16 wheelers covering you with slush going 50....After all isn't fishing only about the catching... NOT.

Plus the hatchery fish are at the end of the road so to speak, and people bonking them are both taking them out of the system upstream of me and buying licences and tags that support ODFW.

I also think the guys at the hatchery holes have a bigger challange competing with 50 of their closest friends for stacked spooked fish than you or I do when we have a river all to ourselves that has fish that have little or no pressure.

I salute the hatchery hole guys!

For those of us that keep a log, myself being one, it's not a bragging tool but a resource to pull up when figuring out a game plan or pattern. I work 5 to 6 days a week so my time spent on the water I want productive thus my log has helped me out this year. I don't fish for hatchery fish stacked up, I don't fish a pay pond for trout, I do eat fish but would rather spend a sporting day on the water enjoying the moment rather than it turning into a meat hunt. I do like catching fish so my time spent on the water is pursuing them, not just sitting back soaking up nature and any tool that helps me put a bend in my rod I will use.

I think 5-Cent's post wasn't all about a bragging post trying to compare numbers and such. I know my response wasn't about that.

The long and short of it, I hope just because I keep a log and can answer a question on how many URB's or keeper sturgeon I have caught in a specific area doesn't put me into a catagory where I make posts to give myself an ego boost or to get the , we are not worthy responses. I just like trying to take some of the guess work out of a days fishing.

Yea I do care about how many fish get's put on the Tacklebuster. I bet most of us know how many miles we have on our cars and trucks. We know what tools we have in the garage and a pretty good idea of what we have for inventory in the angling department. What's the difference in that and having a good idea what has been put on your boat for the year? You take a certain amount of pride in that and you should. You post a report don't ya, what's the difference?

I do not keep track other that knowing I filled a few hatchery cards and most my regular tag.

I never been into the I am a better fisherman that you see how many fish I caught I am the fish god mentality.

I keep a log also but it has water temp and color river height and if I caught fish or not no #s of fish.

I fish to relax and if I catch a fish or 2 that thats a bonus from the man upstairs.

to the best of my memory the best fishing trips I have ever had were total skunks the river was blown the weather sucked the rain was coming down sideways but there wasnt another person on the river just silence and the beauty of nature.

I can tell you I catch enough fish that I eat as much smoked fish as I want and I make a number of people happy when I show up at their door and thats all that really matters to me

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">Very well said Willierower.
I agree with that totally.

I saw the title of the thread several times and thought "oh brother" and never clicked onto the thread.
The thread title alone to me sounded like an ego thing and turned me off.

I've metioned a few times on this site about catching some decent #'s of fish but that was to illustrate the effectiveness of a product say like Brad's Wiggler's or the reliability and quality of Okuma spin reels or even an unexploited fishery like the lower Cowlitz coho fishery.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not the world's greatest fishermen or God's great gift to the fishermen.

I feel the same as you spooled and big ego's turn me off.

But as ****** said I think we all enjoy posting pic's of nice fish we caught.
I even enjoy posting pic's of friends fish or even pic's of perfect strangers I don't even know.

I didn't open the "other" thread Spooled but your thread title was interesting enough for me to click on.

Dear Mr. Spooled, I'm glad you feel better after venting about the grand total post. I personally don't think he was bragging or trying to belittle anyone else because of their fishing skills...He has a log and shared it with us. He posted pics all year and most of the time he was the "Hero". A very nice gentlmen, i done met him once.. Even XYZ is a good guy  I don't have his numbers but i love to post pics of myself and my kids doing what we love to do...I'm going through my usual winter steelhead depression mode but once i get off the bank and in the boat again i'll post as many pic and offer as much info as i can...which will hopefully help someone

Woodrow, the comment about showing off $40,000 boats....I don't have a big dollar boat but let me tell you..It was just pure excitement when i brought that new boat home...Just like the feeling i get when i'm not paying attention and my rod goes flat and line is peeling off my reel. Matter of fact...i know before the day is done...i'm gonna go in my garage and sit in my boat just cuz I've worked hard for a long time and finally have had some good things happen to me...Those guys that posted their boats are just happy. I hope good things happen for you too  I think i'll wash my new truck today  NOT ! 28 degrees out there

RIGHT ON, spooled! I am sick of seeing the endless stream of brag posts that go by on this board. It seems to be certain individuals just have to make up for certain...hmmm...how can I say this ... inadequacies in their life by harping over the fact that they can catch a salmon or a steelhead. Guys...get over it -- catching salmon and steelhead has a lot more to do with having enough free time to be on the water than with some sort of studly fish-catching ability.

I've had my days too, I just caught a few winter steelhead here and there...on rivers that were not the Wilson. And I'm happy about it, and I don't care very much how many team so-and-so slayed on the zipper river. It's a waste of my time.

My real heroes on this board are the guys and gals who turn in poachers, those of us that give the snaggers hell, those that discuss fish issues in an intelligent way ... in a word, those that improve our sport in some way. You braggers, you just don't measure up.

For all the score keepers out there, why don't you take up a a sport more appropriate to your mentality, such as golf?

Some of you guys sound like a bunch of self righteous pompous jerks. Look at your post I don’t like those guys bragging,,,errrr I’ve caught a ton of fish so many I cant count but I’m not bragging. Your busy ranting about how some one post numbers but you still feel the need to toss in that I’ve caught a lot more then most thing with the same breath. Sounds like the very same bragging as you’re complaining about? Get over yourselves.

I have the answer.....

Just open a section on the site called ibrag.net.

Whats next? A guy catches a fish and pulls a sharpie out of his waders, autographs it and hands it to some bankie or once the fish is in the net he pulls the hidden cell phone from under the seat of the boat. You see the parralels I'm eluding to?

Catching a fish is like catching a pass in the end zone. Act like you have been there before.

I admit I didn't read the whole post but what I did was a good representation I think, come on guys if people want to brag thats why were here,to help their fish esteam out alittle, but I want to see some of them skunks....I know I'm not the only one the fish gods forget from time to time.Or maybe instead of a yearly total how but a trips/catch ratio.Maybe fishing avg. At rod/hits I'm about a .500 fisher I think.

Boy......

Why would one care all that much one way or the other?

I dig these dudes that are out slaying all the time and posting cool pics...........takes me back to when I was able to be on the water much more than I am now. I guess I see it as sharing with poor suckas like me, who appreciate seeing fish pics to keep me focused on what I need to do on my days off.

As far as the numbers, again, why let it bother you one way or the other. Some of those numbers put my own to shame, but I don't enjoy the fish I catch any less because of it. I don't call it bragging.........but if they are, some of them have numbers that might deserve a little.

Anyway, it's nothing to get wound up about. If it were just about numbers, we'd be commercial netters. If numbers didn't matter at all, who'd get up at 0'dark thirty to go chase fish with all the associated epquipment, when you could just walk around outdoors?

OK, Tonto;

I got skunked yesterday. No gators, no shakers, no pictures, nuttin'. But I did have a good time with a friend. That's why I fish. I love the pic posts, ignore the "number" posts, and really enjoy the sharing of info and comradery (how do you spell that?) on Ifish.

I think we all should enjoy what we enjoy, and if not, let others enjoy what they enjoy. I only 'watch with amazement' at many of these threads. Choose your battles wisely, and battle only in jest!

Right on DanS. This topic is getting way too hot. As someone once told me "this is not a hill to die on." If someone shares their successes too much, then so be it.

I have appreciated the many informative posts that 5-cents and others have shared in the past. I don't see the need to make personal attacks by suggesting that they are making up for personal "inadequacies". Wow, that sounds like high school talk.

Nobody forces us to read the posts. This board is about sharing camraderie and information. If we continue to blast others for doing so then aren't we defeating the purpose.

Spooled, I did comprehend what you posted and I too could care less if you agree/disagree with me. I still stand with the "if you dont like it, dont read it". And yes, if you do read the "bragging" posts you can catch some info from time to time. The only posts I do not like are the " i caught a ton of fish on my zipperlip and I wont tell you" types. That type of post has no redeeming value. PS, stay away form the brown acid

You know, I care so little for how many fish others caught in a season, I don't, well bother with it.
Some people are proud, maybe others boastful, others have something to prove, but to complain about it looks a lot like jealousy and petty whinery..........................................

Get over it!!

Boy, and we wonder why the organized commercial fishermen continue to take us to the cleaners. Sportfishermen and women must unite or special interest groups will devstate our sport and someday none of us will have anything to brag about.

WARNING:

This thread is one that if you choose to get involved and take sides at all, will probably not be a good thing, in any way, shape, or form.

If you take one side, you'll gain a friend and an enemy.

Please, let's just move on. This isn't doing good things for anyone.

Group hug with or without fish totals! Who cares?

Okay boys and girls, keep it above the belt or it goes bye-bye. If you have posted anything that remotely deserves to be edited you best go back and do so. If it is left to me and I think its too much trouble I'll just move it to the mod board. At that point it may not come back.

Being new to this sport I am definitely still learning, and being a dad with three active boys who also have piano, soccer, etc...my fishing time is very limited. Essentially I don't go unless my boys are with me. If people want to give reports on how many they caught that is fine...But...

The funnest fishing day I had this year (my first year actually) i think is when my fishing smart friend Danny was going to show us how to land a big nook by yourself, largely against my suggestions. You know...he has this super hog on line with one hand, in the Tilly channel, terrible weather, windy as heck, choppy, etc... So he grabs the net with the right hand, holding the rod with the left...and I am laughing and yelling for him to hand me the net so I can get it in for him. He is clearly struggling both with the hog and his ego, since now he is psychologically committed to showing off his great skills..you get the picture...letting his testosterone get the best of him? Anyway he almost falls in trying to do it all in the rough, and won't hand off the net in spite of my repeatedly calling for it...and as hard as he tries over and over again he cannot get this thing in alone. Is he going to give me the net?...NOOOOOOOO...he has to do it himself! So here are two grown men laughing about his floundering, and I am threatening to throw him in the drink if it comes off...but he STILL won't hand off the net. You guessed it...with me chasing him around the boat, and him turning his back so I can't get the net out of his hands, (and me also trying to keep the boat under control or believe me I would have had the net in a second) ... the porker finally shakes off close to the boat. I gave him all kinds of razzing about his showing me how to do it...you know..."Tell me again Danny, how do I do that one handed next time..."

We laughed so hard we didn't much care if we brought any fish in the whole day...in fact we decided, as I usually do, that neither he nor i would bring in a chinook all day until my 13 year old brought in his without any assistance from us, except the net of course. My boy lost two nice ones, but even he was laughing so hard it was hard for him to concentrate on the job at hand, since we were egging him on about being a good sportsman today. We bragged all day to each other for weeks about being such good sportsmen, you know, catch and release, repeatedly in one day...leaving out the middle man (Mr. Net) for increased efficiency.

That day was every bit as much fun as the day we caught a large shark followed by twenty cohos earlier in the season...and we talk about that day much more still...esp when the weather is bad and the fishing is not productive, we brag to each other about what good sportsmen we are going to be today....and the laughing starts anew from all of us.

I don't mind people's tallying their season totals...but this will be my season's best single memory day. The only way it could have been better, under the circumstances, would have been if I had thrown Danny in the drink....But since it was cold and choppy it would have been too hard to get him back in the boat and warmed up again. But if he ever does that again on a warm, calm day...he is gone!!

(Perhaps you had to be there to really get the felling.)

M.

Thanks Stew. I have taken Kevin fishing more than once, and if that is his opinion, I respect that.

Sport fishers unite? Man that would be nice. I wonder if half would miss the monthly meeting due to the "zipperlip" location it is being held

I couldn't imagine springer season with all sport fisherman being united. I am satisfied just getting off the stinking river without someone hitting my boat, trolling through my gear, giving me dirty looks, and seeing at least three arguments on the river

Thanks John, but I learned my lesson going head to head with "Killer" . I can't believe you even bothered to try a "new" plug with "Killer" in the arsenal. Pinkie worked well yesterday, but I can't say it is ready for the big time .....yet.

Numbers, what are they just numbers. The only amount of fish numbers I can give you are the ones on my Tag. Beside's those I don't keep track.

Killer slept all day today........tried somthing new, went 4 for 8 on plugs and 1 for 1 on a jig. Dad got a 18lb (est.) wild hen today on the new one. She peeled 30 yards of line off before he got it out of the holder and burned his thumb trying to slow her down. She was loaded w/sea lice and just magnificent.....wish I had a camera.

Good stuff Troy!

I know how many fish we boated last year. But that is because I keep a log. I do not keep a log to track fish numbers.

I did not post them here simply for the fact that nobody cares how many( few actually) fish I caught.

The rest of the log is a good read though.

How sad

Lets have a fishing board where no one posts numbers, reports or pictures. Lets just say that you have caught a lot of fish last year but never tell anyone where, how, with what bait or lure or how deep the water was. Above all lets not have fun doing it and please never, ever share a good story with a bunch of people that love the same sport you do. Ya that would be a great fishing board. What a place... what an idea... what a big piece of floating pond scum!

Get real! This is why this board exisits. If you dont like it dont participate... oh thats right those of you complianing dont most of the time! If you dont like the reports and pictures dont read them but complaining about reports and pictures on a site that exists for people to post such things is silly!

Besides how do you know me from Adam? I would never make an assumption about ANYONE on this board without meeting them first and giving them a chance. When you are reading posts there is absolutely no tone or feeling. What somone is typing can be taken totally wrong from what is tyring to be conveyed. I have bumped heads with people on this site in the past but when I met them they are just plain good people... even Get Bent! So thinking that you know me by reading what I have posted without actually meeting me is at best short sighted.

Fact of the matter is I like posting. I like telling stories. I like meeting new people that like doing what I like to do and this is THE best forum around to do it and I will never appologize for it or feel bad for participating!

By the way I would like to know where these so called hatchery holes are! I go fishing quite a bit and dont bring anything home so I would really like to know. If you are referring to Ty's posts I personally LOVE all the pictures! Keep up the good work!

Way to Go Spooled.

The post from the fellah with 14 days off in a row & a Slaughter on the 10 th really hit the nail for me, but I bit my tongue.

I enjoy tying my own rigs, rags, spinners. the crowds I can do without. I was reminded this year why I ussually don't bother to fish for Chinook. I think I'll wait for the natives, all the meat fishers should be off the river by then.

Peace.
