Re: Coho with a Fly rod?
1) Do a google on bucktailing for coho. Study the results.
2) Fish a sinking line with a straight 10 to 15 pound mono leader about 6 feet long. Tie on a streamer. I tie my own, and will post a picture when I get home tonight. I use bucktail and synthetic hair stacked to imitate herring, anchovies, or candlefish. White body with chartreuse, green, and blue stacked up works, I put black tiger srtipes on some of mine with a sharpie. Other color combos do too, just make sure it has eyes epoxied on to it. Flip your fly out so it is right at the back of your wake (while trolling around 2 mph) 15-30 feet behind the boat. Hold the rod tightly, the strikes can be brutal! The flies flutter between the surface nad a few feet below. The fish come up to investigate the disturbance created by the wake and see the fly and whamo! Best times to fish are right at first light, and right at last light. The bite lasts longer on overcast days. Calmer seas have been better for me in the past. I hear some guys say they like a little chop. That's the experimentation part.
The biggest fish I've caught dragging a fly was about 14 pounds, and it was a hoot. Good luck and post pics!
