Default Is this the line I should buy?

My friends, I have a chance to place a one-time order with RIO. I was thinking of getting their Aqualux line for my CP/Hosmer brook trout quest (9' 5wt Sage rpl- oldschool!). I have some older level-sinking lines but everyone is saying that clear is the way to go. Any other RIO products I should get?? what about leaders- flouro? how long? Thank you for any consideration you give this. Dave

Dave, I have an aqualux clear line and really like it. It casts a little different (kinda tip heavy) than a standard weight forward line, but once you get used to it it's great.

I also have a Sage RPL and really like it too.

As far as leaders go, I've never used an F/C tapered leader. However, I've used F/C tippet and would recommend it in clear water.

[edit] I would add that F/C is a little different to tie knots with. It's slicker, so ofen you need an extra wrap. Tie a few practice knots and see how they hold up.

Dave,

I have never fished any RIO lines so I'm no help there. But, if you are getting a cut on this stuff I would definitely pick up some Flurocarbon leaders and tippet material. That stuff is great for subsurface applications.

Mark- I was going to get some 3X and 4X (and MAYBE 5X) 12 footers and maybe some a little shorter since it flouro. Also some flouro tippet material. Does this sound about right? Thanks!! Dave

Their flourocarbon tippet is the best made IMO. I fished it exclusively until I realized that $15 a spool was a bit steep....but at a discount I would gobble it up.

thanks! btw: have you guys tried maxima flourocarbon for tippet material? it is the strongest flouro I have ever used for bass fishing (gear) applications and it's less $ than the tippet material......I have never tried it for that but wonder if it's just priced higher for fly applications and lower for us bubbahs- he he.

I have heard poor reviews for the Maxima flouro...I have never tried it though. I have tried Berkley Vanish that was made for gear fisherman...and it SUCKS! My favorite so far is the Seaguar flourocarbon.

I have had terrible results with Berkeley Vanish, too. I wonder why there is so much difference when they all are 100% Flourocarbon? try the Maxima- it is nasty strong like the Seagaur- not sure if it's AS good. Dave

Dave,

I wouldn't go any smaller than 4x. You can always make your leader longer by trimming a little an adding on some 5x tippet to make a longer lake leader. I haven't tried the Maxima flouro yet.
