Default Swimbait / casting reel

From the 870 accurate to the abu 6500. I am a practiced caster but the reel that I was going to use is just not going to cut it (20/40s shimano) I'm scared of less than 20 lb and happier around 30-40. Mark mc, Hoggemin, El shaddai and others chime in. basic albacore rig.

I have a Penn Squidder I got off the auction site, and used it to good success last year. It seemed to hold up well and I think I'm running 30# on it.

I also have a couple of Avet MXL's that cast pretty well (on my lawn) but I haven't had a chance to try them in combat yet. On them I have 50# tuff with a topshot of 30# mono.

Yea....Squidder if you want to stay "thrifty"

Newell 229 is hard to beat for distance casting...20 - 25 lb line

Newell 322 or 332 for 25 - 30 lb line

Newells are priced pretty reasonably too (the Chark place)

Avets...great reels but they backlash a lot easier than a Newell...plus more $

I would recomend a 270 or 870 Accurate then a MXL Avet 0r 229 Newell they are all great reels but the accurates are quite spendy but are sweet casting. You won't go wrong with a Newell though.

I just looked at the website and charkbt has the newell 229 in left hand retrieve for quite a bit less than the right hand reels. I prefer left handed reels and housemouse is a lefty.
Is there any difference other than handle location?

Im not so sure about the purple.. Hoggemin gets enough ribbing due to his purple reels.. I think he just likes talking to The Beth ;-)

If you want thrifty..we use a spinning ugly stick 20/50....and a penn spin reel w/80# power pro...40# leaders. Less than 200 and we beat the heck out of them.
They look gross, but almost undestructable.

I broke 2 G Loomis one year, and some other expensive rod of RJs.....but the ugly things are still in the pole rack

Now mind you I've not tried this yet on the water and as BOE would say I'm a low mileage unit. I picked up a Lamiglass Sardinia 870spinning 15-30# at the factory outlet for $50 and put a Penn 650ssm on it. The reel including shipping was $94, added 125 yards of 50# Tuff XP and 75 yards of 30# Green Gama Copoly - it flips a 2 oz ball nicely.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the 229, the Purple one has some improvements to the black and Alan the reel guy suggests servicing the reel b4 fishing it.

Not sure where you see that. The purple & red 229 is $175. ;

the black 229 is $124.64.

Maybe you were looking at the "retro" P series. Scroll down further to find the standard series.

Since we're comparing TUNA! casting reels......

I've had my eye on one of the accurate 870's, but in the narrow version.

Anyone out there have one these? Since getting my Daiwa SLT-20 last year, I am a HUGE fan of the lever drags. I have casted and owned many newells, and they are good reels, but really want something of good quality, durability and with a lever drag.

Any other suggestions on reels out there? What about Tiburons or maybe Alutecnos. My thinking is for casting to TUNA! and double duty as ocean salmon reel.

BTW....I've got two penn squidders (big one and the little one, models 140 & 146, the little one is brand new, used maybe twice) that I'm about to post onto the tackle for sale board. If any Salty ones are interested, PM me for information and pics. Special price to the dogs, with donation to Ifish....

What about the tld 15 20 and 25 for albies? the spool looks kinda heavy for casting on the 15 but anyone got any experience with them? I used a 20 for years with dad on the east coast, we were always happy with them.

Rick,

The biggest problem with the Shimanos is the weight of the spool. The old surf fishers rule (that holds true) is the: the length of the cast is inversely proportionate to the weight of the rotating mass. This is why Newells and the Penn Squidders are known for casting so well. Both (mostly, there are variations in the newells) use a spool made from various types of phenolic (fiberglass) resins.

Lighter spool = less start up inertia = longer cast with less chance or incident of backlash.

The shimanos TLD's are good reels, and will work with a lure heavy enough to get your spool turning, but they will: A, backlash and B, will not cast a light (re: less than 2.5 oz) jig head very well at all.

p.s. Nova wants to know when the (evil) Sailor Jerry will be unleashed again with you?

I have a 870 narrow and a wide I think the narrow would do what U are asking but I like the wide better the narrow is really narrow and the wide is about as wide as a ABU 6500. I hope this helps U woul't go wrong with ether one though.

HI,

Though most of my light line experience comes from Yellowfin and Blackfin tuna they should be just fine on Albi's. First off if you're on a private boat with only a couple of anglers, 20lbs outfit will meet 95% of your needs. Though I have caught YTF's on 14 lbs test. Albacore tends to put up less of a fight then the other tuna's I have mentioned so the need for a 30lbs outfit is a bit overkill. Especially when the albi's really aren't that big in the NW(tuna under 35lbs). My Gear as follows;

20 lbs outfit - 8ft G loomis Back Bounce rod with either Daiwa Saltiga 20 or Penn 525 Mag(new)
For tuna's in the 15 - 25 lbs range

25 lbs outfit 8ft Calstar 800L Daiwa Saltiga 30 or Daiwa sealine x 30

Spinning gear Sevens Seas Ultimate Z 7'2"(custom made in japan, made for light line tuna fishing) Shimano Stella 5000 PG Spectra with either 16 or 20 lbs topshot.

Both Seeker and Calstar have cheaper 7 ft versions made out of fiberglas and Daiwa has the Saltist, all excellent well made gear.

When using light line it is very important to set your drag properly. Pre fight drag should be about 25-27% of breaking strength, then after intial run adjust to 30% breaking stength, after that I use thumb pressure to apply needed pressure. Make sure you have tape on your thumb and fore finger. Others use different techniques but this system seems to work for, it may prolong the battle but less break offs.

Some of my gear is rather costly,(I am single now and have no life)so I allow myself obscenely expensevie items that I know would [whoopsydaisies!] off my X.

There is Charkbait and Allcoast fishing forums that have endless discussions on this very topic.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

ED

I looked at the TLD's and our resident reel surgeon suggests to rework the drags on those reels or just don't get them wet. Appears the drag washer is canvas and when it gets wet it locks up - just passing along info I got as I was researching reels - I've fished briefly with the TLD and they do make good trolling reels, but casting?

I ended up going with an Avet JX on a rod that has casting in its destiny as well - I'm just not going to try that till I've had a chance to go practice with it - Avet says they have an anti back lash - basically the bait setting on the lever drag - cannot testify to how well it works, but the reel sure is purdy - so are them black and red Accurate, but they will set you back as much as an Avet EX Pro 30 2speed. I think Nalu posted back in reel and rod combination post about casting with Avet LX (wide JX) and he said they'd toss a country mile?

Keep us posted when the order goes - and how it works
