2000 North River inboard engine problem
I have a friend who is one of those great guys to be around and has an awesome boar, but he does not know alot about them.
He said he had it out on the river and when he went to excelerate it would bog down. After a few times of this it would go up to full power. The boat has about 20 hours on it.
He told me he found a plug wire that was not connected. I know I know. Anyway........
Anyone have any suggestions on what the problem is?
Thanks
Dave B.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
Sounds like a fuel issue to me.
Carbureted or injected?

Like Matt said sounds like fuel to mee as well. Try changing the fuel filter.

plug wire off: engine would run rough.
Pull the plugs. If you're running lean your plugs will be scorched.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
I was thinking it was the fuel filter as well. I will tell him to change it and see where that goes. The boat has been sitting in a garage since 2000 with a few trips out. He does not have the time to get it out alot.
Thanks for the help and I will post the results.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
If it's been 6 years, it could be the gas itself. Old gas likes to make a mess of things and clog parts up.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
He said the fuel(half tank with fuel stablaizer) has been in there under a year and he topped it off on the 4th of July. His fuel filter has not been changed. I told him to change that and see what happens.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
I have a 99 North River w/ 350 Kodiak. I had the same problem. Mine started at 180 hours. A couple of things to add to the possiblities. It was fuel issue for mine. Mine needed a carb overhaul. $76 kit and a few hours on the bench. Don't attempt if you don't know what you are doing. Also could be fuel pump, or fuel pick up in the tank.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
I would say old gas. Even at a year with fuel stabilizer, the fuel will break down. Also treat the fuel for water. I had this issue with my NR almost every spring. If your buddy doesn't get out much, some of the fuel in the tank could easily be a couple years old.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
Six years garaged and a 'few' trips out---could be anything. Carbs fuel bowl could be gummed up, causing the valve to stick. Filter clogged or filled with water. Fuel pump diaphragm possibly dried out and cracked.
Pump out the old gas--it certainly isn't helping anything. The gas restorer/maintainer only helps for a short period (one year max) and the volatile part of the gas is lost by now. It will fire, but the skoot is gone. Replace the filter because it is cheap. Change plugs. Do a fuel pump check for constant pressure. Try again. My two pennies.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
Another quick thing to look at is the accellerator pump diaphragm on the carb.

Re: 2000 North River inboard engine problem
I second the accelerator pump. Carbs have rubber parts that rot out due to sitting too long. I just picked up an old F250 that was hardly ever driven and every rubber part in the carb is just about shot.
