Westport TUNA! on (edit) Sunday
My buddy, his 16 yr old, and I are hoping to head outta Westport tomorrow. North of Shoalwater is 3-5 and 7 @ 11. South of Shoalwater is 2 and 6 @ 11. If the updated forecast gets better, we'll head out. Anybody else? Looking at probably heading WSW 35-40 miles from the jetty, 124.5 / 46.5.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
I'm still thinking that forecast seems too lumpy to have fun. Take a look at the Grays Harbor buoy report to verify actual conditions before you head out- leave home.
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46211
Currently showing 6ft@8 secs. add wind chop and sounds like an uncomfortable ride to me.
Also consider that the max ebb tomorrow for Grays Harbor is at 6am and the bar conditions are listed as 7-9ft. and moderate....Ouch!
Perhaps it will lay down but the swell forecast is increasing.
Good luck,
Beeeeeee

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
The Coast Gaurd has had bar restrictions running since the weekend. Definitly watch the tides with the swell being up.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
We saw the midday report and aded the Bar conditions and decided to bag it until better conditions. Ended up going outta Potlach last night after work for a boat ride. 3 boats, 1 about 18" and another about 5" (stretched out)
I have to be at Sauvie Island on Saturday for a hunt test. If we get through the first series, we'll be running on sunday too. But, if we bounce on saturday, then maybe a Sunday trip is doable.
Mike - you been out around this area yet? We've been thinking about giving Anderson a shot.
Either of you two looking to do live bait?

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
There are rumblings of a trip possibly being put together for Sunday out of Westport. I'll let you know if it looks likely.
I think you made the right call by not going. There were some flatter moments probably somewhere out there but the bar forecast alone was enough to make me not want to try it.
Keep in touch.

I'm thinking Sunday is looking pretty good if conditions hold. Laurence, you up for a jaunt onto the the deep blue or will you still be working your dogs? I keep feeling the season's slipping away - tick, tick, tick, tick .

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
I'll be aboard the Just Right 2 heading west out of Westport on Sunday/Monday in search of Tuna. We would love to have a few wingmen. Please post here and what channel you will be monitoring. We will be pulling out of the harbor about 4:30.

Any firm plans for Sunday? I'm thinking of running - putting together a crew as we speak. Anybody else?

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
If the dawg and I don't do well on our hunt test at Sauvie Island (Saturday), Poi Dog and I will be out (weather permitting). We'll be looking for an early start (around 0400-0430), so no live bait. Post up what times you are thinking about leaving and what direction and we'll try to meet up in the harbor or on the wild blue.
O'yea, preferred VHF channel would be handy too.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
I would probably be heading out a bit later like 6:00. Still getting used to the boat so we're gonna take it easy. I will know more later tonight. Let me know what channel you guys run.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Curious Todd, looking at your profile you are located in Snohomish WA. How long does it take to tow your boat down to westport. I live in Arlington and a Tuna Freak. Thinking of spending couple days in west port for tuna.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Tom,
You know how that goes - depending on traffic, etc. about 3.5-4. We take it easy along the way.
What boat are your running?

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Looks like it's probably going to be salmon on Sunday for us, with a possibility of tuna Mon or Tues. I'm still waiting to hear from the skipper and his decision. I'll post if and when a plan comes together. We usually run ch. 68 out there but the southern dogs run 78. It would probably be good to enter both channels into the scan on your radio when tuna bound. I was out of Westport on the salmon opener and could hear some of the people from Newport and Depoe chattering on 78 as well as Key West out of Astoria. When the conditions are right you can hear people from a long way.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
PoiDog and I will be launching about 0400 Sunday. Current forecast is 10-15knt, 1-2' windwaves, 5' well @ 10 seconds. We'll be in a 22' Trophy with hardtop and diesel. We'll monitor VHF 68 and 78.
From the looks of
We'll head out SW from the Jetty. Unless someone has a better shot of Terrafin and any other recommendations...

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Holy Criminy. Looks like folks pounded them today. We ent outta westport at 0430, bearing 230 degrees. Got to about 46.5 and 124.5. Water temp was slowly creeping up from 57. We agreed thwt when it hit 59, the gear would go in. About 10 minutes later, the gear went in. 1st fish was about 10 minutes into a SW troll. Landed him and continues SW, but the water temp dropped. Came back to the first strike spot and picked up a triple, still 59 degrees. Did a figure 8 through the area and hit another trip. We ended up going as far as 50 miles out and never saw 60 degree water or a jumper. Finished with 3 triples, 2 doubles and 3 singles = 16 longfins. That was enough for the two of us and back to the ramp we headed about 1300. WE did hear of another boat that went out 70 miles (due west) before getting into fish and ended with 15 for 2 guys. They didn't hit 60 until at least 50 miles.

This here is the toll TUNA! fishing can take on a fellow.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Sunday was an all around great day fishing , thanks Wdlfbio . I was feeling good about the 16 tuners we boated until I saw the reports some of the other boats were putting up down south, but at least we didn't have to cark fish into the wee hours of the night.
If I knew we were going to catch fish and get bloody, I wouldn't have worn my good hunting shirt, and if I knew you were going to bust out the camera while I was sleeping, I would have worn a suit and tie.

Re: Westport TUNA! on Wednesday
Rick, although our bite wasn't wide open like it was further south, we still could have used your help. Unfortunately, the trip was a last minute decision that came together about 10:00pm Saturday night after checking out the weather report. We only had an open seat because my boy was supposed to go, but cancelled at the last minute when his baseball team advanced to Sunday's championship game after winning a couple on Saturday at his tournament. If he knew how good Sunday's fishing was, he may have thrown the game so he could go catch tuna . Well at least we offered to let him help cark at the end of the day .
