Default Old New Dog

We have all heard the expression "can't teach an old dog new tricks". With this "tunamania" prevolent, I'm probably going to put that expression to the test. I've been away from the salt for over 25 years. I use to fish off the CR back in the 70's. Back then Salmon was king. Tuna was something you bought in a can with a Starquist label on it. I had a 25' lapstake Owens inboard. Unlike today, slips back then were rented by the month & it was impossible to get one during July & Aug. So I would rent a slip from the start of the ocean season (sometime in May) through the end of June. So in any given year I would fish out of Ilwaco, Hammond or Warrenton. Salmon were plentifull with a 3 fish limit, any species & they all carried a full compliment of fins. I'm a little puzzled by what's going on at the fishing grounds. The fish, even that early in the season were in close to the mouth of the river. We generally found them around #4 or #6 & maybe a little south. There was no closed Recreational Control Zone & fishing in the channel between the Red Line & the Green Line was common. Rarely did one have to run out to the Light Ship (now the CR Buoy) to find fish. Maybe somebody who knows can offer some explanation. Communication on the salt was by CB radio. Everybody used them. The Charters talked in code to disguise where the bite was. But after a few years of listening to their jargon, I pretty much had them deciphered. Today of course they can use cell phones. In any case in the late 70's, the fishery started a rapid decline & oil/gas availability was becoming a problem so I sold my boat & left the sport.

Fast forwarding to the current, I decided to get back into fishing the ocean & last year bought a used 23' ACB. It doesn't have a name on it other than the Manufacturers label for the Model which is "Explorer". I can live with that. After a year of being on the waiting list, I recently got a slip in Hammond. I'm looking forward to giving this Tuna thing a try & will probably pester somebuddy about being a wing man. They got to to get in a little closer for me though with a kinder gentler ocean. I look forward to meeting up with some of you & hopefully I can occasionally post something of interest to earn my keep around here.

Fog Horn, Welcome aboard!

Enjoyed your history. I too remember the 3 fish limit. I quess people like us were part of the salmon diminishing problem.

Congrats on your 23' ACB. We also have a 23' ACB center console we are mooring at South Beach Marina, Newport. Great boats, you will really enjoy it.
