Ho Ho Holdzit quickie contest, "Fishing on Christmas"
Hey there.... Pat wants all contest orders in by tomorrow. Contest due by tomorrow! Yikes! Write a quickie fishing on christmas story, k?
Thanks!
Congrats to our past winner, Hookset! Carry an extra oar... Read it, and then.... DO IT! Please? Heard too many oarless stories! Seen one boat go down. Not a good site.

Re: Ho Ho Holdzit quickie contest, "Fishing on Christmas"
How about a Christmas eve story ! It was the day before Christmas, all banks were full with lines in the water. I was a fry not knowing which way to fish , Should I use 4,6,8oz of lead ,then I made a freind, an old chromer three seasons my age. He said to me son you don,t have to throw far. The fishs are right at your feet and only use 4oz of lead and do you have a bell to put atop that pole. I had laid awake all night long to make sure I would be at the bank by 5a.m. so I could fine the spot that I had pick out the day before. So I did what the old chromer had said and by 8:30a.m. that day I had a 10 lb. bright silver christmas gift, that was full of eggs @ Meldrum bar ,99

Re: Ho Ho Holdzit quickie contest, "Fishing on Christmas"
Jen,
Just noticed only 1 entry so far. Can we enter two contests? No biggy if not, just chalk this one up to a Christmas fish story.
In 1987 I was a starving fishhead. I was young, single, etc and all I did was work when I had to (Emphasis on "Had to") and fish salmonids. This Christmas, our family planned to celebrate in the evening so the morning was free. Fish were in the EF Lewis. For gifts I had managed to save a little money and planned to simply give away some cash. It was the easy way out and my family usually frowned on such a gift. Anyway, Christmas morning finds me on the river. It was surprisingly crowded. I thought I was surrounded by a bunch of atheists, but hey, I was there too.
It was still dark as I made my first couple casts. As my line drifted my mind did too and I began to reflect on the meaning of Christmas, plus how lucky I was to be able to fish as much as I did. No fish were being hooked around me and it appeared to be a fishless day for all. But then around 10am it happened. The familiar peck, peck, whammo, sizzle! I had hooked into a very strong fish and we played each other well. It turned out to be an 18lb chrome sea-liced winter buck. Many of the fishermen around me said I must have been living "Right" in order to get such a prize. I thought about that statement and still think about it, especially around Christmas. That was the only fish I saw hooked that day. As it turned out, I gave away fresh fish steaks that Christmas and everyone was happy. But I will never forget the "Living-Right" statement and what it felt to me that Christmas day in 1987.

Re: Ho Ho Holdzit quickie contest, "Fishing on Christmas"
I know it is to late for the contest but thought I would share.
I always fish on Christmas morning. It became my own tradition in my unmarried years and my lovely wife has allowed me to carry it on.
My brother in-law from Washington wanted to join me one morning because I had done well on Christmas eve. He is an accomplished fly fisherman but had little experience with level winds and bait. (He couldn't even say the word bait) I took him to the hole where I had hooked many the day before. You had to stand on a high bank, flip through the tree branches and then let the current suck it into the side. Russ fished the slot for about 20 minutes with me coaching him to try to swing his bait into the bank. After no takers he says okay you give it a turn. I took his place, cast out and was telling him where to put the bait so it would swing into the slot. As I was pointing at the holding water he was leaning over my shoulder to see. At that moment a steelie engulfed my bait slamming my rod down, I immediately whipped the rod back hard setting the hook while burying the rod in my brother in-laws face. He fell backwards on to the lip of the bank and I had to spin around and grab his coat with one hand while fighting the fish with the other. I landed both my brother in-law and the fish. A profitable Christmas. Russ did wear this nifty, long, rod shaped welt across his face for Christmas dinner but it sure kept the conversation moving.

I keep noticing how all of the winners' stories always seem to be short and to the point. If that is part of the criteria, then shouldn't it be posted somewhere? Elvis has left the building.
