The sheriffs marine patrol also relayed the same to me this afternoon. I heard from the Whistle bouy at Newport to the Lighthouse was the ticket.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays
Today Report:
The coho that were in close are gone out to see due to the northerly winds we have had. We went all the way out to 52 fathoms just north of the north end of the pile and were unable to locate any fish at all. There were a few trollers on the north end of the pile, but I never saw them put any fish on the boat, just empty hooks. We were only able to find 50.5 degree water with as far as we went west.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays
Just talked to a couple of the other guys in Depoe. Same story as CoastalFisherman. Nada. Last 2 days were slam-bang, and today nary a bite for at least 4 charters.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
We got out about 0600. And you guys were right everyone said to go NW til 180' and look for warmer water. We were about 6 miles from jaw and kept going deeper water temp was only 46/47. Everyone that would talk saying the same thing nada. About 930 we heard Fireplug talking bout get a couple of fish. When ask the told US *THANK YOU* that he was off of Seal Rock in 180 ft metering a lot of bait and fish. I am not yet familiar with Newport so at first that didn't mean much. Than figured out it was south. We headed that way only we were about 15 miles away and it took a little bit to get there. The whole time we were hearing got another one, we got two. Just as we got about to the fleet the water temp jumped to 51 and we started metering fish and bait. We dumped the line and bam got one the a few later another. All the time the weather was turn sour. In a few got another a nate this time. Made one more pass and got another. If we could have be an hour earlier we should have limited. All coho just under the surface and for us the hoochie out fished. Fish small bout 9lbs but will taste good. All fish full of herring/squid. Thanks All.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
I talked to my neighbor today, who crossed the bar with a friend on board just prior to 0700. They were back by 0900 w/ 4 coho and ready for breakfast.
All were caught in about 120' of water off of Ona Beach, about 3 miles south of the bar in Newport. All were caught in about 15 minutes. All were between an estimated 6.5 and 8 lbs. Coho were finning and jumping on the surface and hit their gear as soon as the divers were set. Water temp was about 51 degrees. He said it was a feeding frenzy and they were only able to keep one rod in the water at a time for the short time it took them to catch 4 legals. In that same time period they released 3 nates. They ran into 2 schools of bass that were splashing on the surface too, but couldn't get them to bite at all.
I think I might just be sick tomorrow........

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
I talked to Ron Turman of Turman's Tackle up in Reedsport, Oregon yesterday and he said they are whacking Coho big time there. He also stocked up on FBR herring size salmon trolling lures as he said the locals using them can't get them down before being bit.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
FBR = Franko Bullet Rotator. They are popular in California where they use them with anchovies to make the bait spin. They have a fast tight spin which would make them effective on Coho's.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
Headed out yesterday (7/19) and spent 9 hours trolling between the Lighthouse and Seal Rock. Ended up with 7 drive-bys and 2 long releases, nothing in the boat . H2O temp was between 48 - 50.5 degrees.
The conditions may have looked good, but it was a complete soup sandwich .

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
Those FSB's are the same thing as a Rotary Salmon Killer (RSK) right. I had one of them on when we went out and that was the only rod that did not get hit.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
I have used RSK's almost exclusively and caught 20 - 40 lb Chinook in the same water folks could only turn up a few Coho in. So, my boat must smell better...

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
If you said a FBR is the same as an RSK on a certain california saltwater board (read that Coastside) you would be banned for life!
Not the same as an RSK. The rotation is much tighter. I think both are good salmon tackle, they both catch fish. So does cut plug, and crowbars, cable bars, sheetmetal bars, and two hook rigs, and herring aids, etc.
FBRs are kind of a pain because you have to put a toothpick in to hold the bait in place. But they work. There are a bunch of californians who would tell you they outfish everything else 10 to 1 due to their tight roll.
Sorry to hijack the thread. A buddy of mine got a couple today out in front of depoe. Not red hot, but a few fish around.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
Thanks for the input Kurt. The standard, original softies and herring size FBR has brass pins since early 2005. The reusable brass pins make it really easy to load even for novice and children. Put in an anchovy pop in the pin and put it in the water.
Originally toothpicks were used to avoid lead warming that must be on packaging if it contain even a minute amount of lead. However the lead warning was added to the packaging and then brass pins were added then. The standard and softie fits 5-7 inch anchovy or herring (green label) and the herring size fits 7 -9 inch herring (Blue label) all available in 6 colors.

Are the FBR's available anywhere in the Portland area? I did find them online if not.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
What I am about to say might sound like a smart-alec comment, but it's the truth:
The people who say that an FBR outfishes everything else 10:1 are people who don't truly know how to stick a bait on a crowbar (or cable hook, etc), and don't know how to properly present it...which includes knowing how to bend the hook for a given trolling speed.
The highliner charter guys down there who have routinely had 40 - 50 fish days in the last month don't use FBRs, RSKs, or any other gimmick.
Now, if a guy does NOT know how to stick a bait (without mangling it), then yes I would say that one of these devices is a good thing for that guy because he can now rig a bait without ruining it.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
I went out yesterday at 3:00pm and caught a 7# & 9# hatchery coho in less than 30 minutes. Started at Seal Rock and trolled south at the 200 foot line. A bunch of birds working. Caught then using a plain old point defiance spoon set 50 feet behind the downrigger ball at 15 feet.

Re: Salmon Reports Depot/Newport Bays Update 7/19
Thanks for the input Mark Mc. Some of the party boat due provide cable baiters and crowbars that has to be baited only by the deck-hand, but they allow their customers here to pull their own rigging except flashers which will entangles everybody. The high-liners Gravy and New Gravy out of Half Moon Bay provides FBR exclusively for their customers as they catch fish and the customers do all their own baiting. For the last two weeks the averages has been 1 1/2 fish to limits (2 fish each) for the full load party boats willing to make a 45 mile runs from the Golden Gate Bridge which is about 4 hours traveling each way and making for some big fuel bills and 13 hour days for the boat. Minimum load party boats are staying local and having limited sucess. Based on the silvers being caught and must be released in California the Oregon folks are going be catching a whopping bunch of coho when they get there. Hopefully a record coho season.
