Default Late report, Sea Lion 7-14 Depoe Bay

Sorry for the late report. Things have been crazy.

The fish were close on Thursday. Departed Depoe Bay at about 6:00 a.m. about 20 minutes behind Kismet headed for 45 125.
Saw lots of good signs and Kismet dropped in before us. Well at 56 over 40 the water temp was 62.9 degrees and we had radio fish behind us. We deployed the gear and imediately had a triple. That was every piece of gear we had out. From then on to about 10:00 we could not get all the gear in the water. We had 10 fish at 10:00, 20 by noon and 25 at 3:20 in the afternoon. We picked up one more trolling back in.
We still had 62.4 degree water at 59 over 40, within 18 miles of the beach.
Kismet dropped in on bait crashing Tuna and tagged a triple only 12 miles from the beach on the way back.

While I may have caught more fish number wise, I have never had as many pounds of fish aboard as I did this trip. We had an estimated #450 of loins. It was the first time I have ever had my boat struggle coming back to port. I was only able to push 18.5 knots at a burn rate of 6.5 GPH. I didn't know my fuel flow meter went that high.
Anyway, it was an epic day with good company out there.

Total for Sea Lion, 26 fish and 3 happy hearty souls.

By the way, several fish way over #30 and no fewer than 3 that were #40 plus.

Drifty, post up your pics please?...

Good Job Ray!

You were driving Pilar nuts!!! with the "WFO, and WE CAN'T GET ALL GEAR OUT"....That is until he got his first triple!

He kept talking to himself "Never leave fish..Never leave fish".

It was a fun day out there with you and Aqua Holic, and the others.

Talk about a carking lesson!!!!!!!

Bob, it was my pleasure.
I know that chant Johnboy was mouthing all too well.
If I had stayed where I was instead of plying further West I might have sunk my boat with fish... That quad kept me heading that way, especially when I got a double on the next pass. fun stuff.
I like to run at least 6 lines but I only got that many in the water twice and it didn't last long.
An Epic day for sure.

Ray,

When was it you started your count down to the very day you would plug your boat. 140 days ago?????

You patiently watched as us kids ran a long way out early, burning lots of gas, and just playing around scratching up a few when we could get to them.

Then you timed it perfect, walked out there, when the Tuna were the nearest to DB, and bam!!! Put the big hirt on them.

How do you do it master????

This young padawan stands with mouth slack, slightly drooling, in awe of the TUNA! masters.

Super sweet Ray. I look forward to years of learning from the old salts like you and John.

Geoff, here is the guy that took your spot...

You should thank him.
Take a look at how tired he is.

It isn't too late to walk away....

Ah, Ray...

It is too late. John saw to that.

That picture used to bring a smile to my face... now I just cry a little knowing ... well, another time.

<sarcasm on>

Yeah, I'm sure glad I wasn't that tired and didn't have that much blood all over me and had to cark for 5 hours and didn't get home at 4 in the AM and had to process 150lbs of piggy TUNA!. Real glad.

<sarcasm off>

Wow, I'm jealous.

Can a Tuna boat still be a family boat when your done for the day? I'm still trying to figure out how I can catch tuna and not get blood everywhere.

Ray how much fuel did you burn?

Ray,
Wow .... I am speechless. Your boat is a mess. And that is as it should be. I have to say it was one of the best days in a very long time. We slayed them on 'Kismet' and all hands got bloody and sore. I believe in Karma and it is nice to see it come back for those that deserve it.

Most excellent work skipper. I remember the days when you rode with me on the old 'Pilar' and the fun we had. Now you pass this on to others and I look on smiling. What happens now seems to be the logical progression from there. I look forward to winging with you again and to find out where you take it from here.

Regards,
John

Johnboy, I was YOUR wingman. I plan to be there more too.
Me being on the ocean on my own boat is all your fault for sharing a seat on Pilar. Those were the days that the dream we lived last week was born. As we headed in Brian had that stupid smile on his face as he looked over at me while I was navigating back. We both laughed that silly laugh like we had just goten away with something and I thought back to the many days you and I did the same. Both of my crew from that day have called several times to thank me for a fantastic day of fishing and to make sure they are on the short list to go back again.
I remember heading bach through the fog dog with a box full of Halibut and Salmon.... Looking at you with a stupid smile on my face and sharing that silly laugh.... I think about Geoff and Brian, and how the cycle continues.
Without your tutalage and guidance I wouldn't be the skipper that I am today. Thanks again, lets get back out there.
