There's a story in the Oregonian (via www.oregonlive.com) that gives some hints. It sounds like they were in a rough sea and lost power. The story speaks to the importance of having a long/lat at the ready.

Thanks for the link, but the only report I could find was about Fridays incident, at least I think it was Friday's incident. There was another situation on Sat. and I think that was the one for which info was requested.

We were jigging for herring in Yaquina Bay when CG got the call and were out of there like lightning...on the VHF the call was that it was a small PC taking on water...no further explanation that I heard...but sounded like another boater was in the neighborhood and kept tabs on them until CG got there...they sure had that boat strapped onto the CG boat when it came in...took it into south beach.

At the same time, we heard a radio call from another PC heading into Depoe Bay on their kicker asking for the CG to keep tabs on them..guess their main motor quit on them...that wouldn't be much fun either -- the wind was starting to get cranked up pretty good by that time...can't imagine it was a nice ride for either of them.

Yeh, Caty, that was us puttin' in to Depoe on the kicker with periodic help from the sick big motor. We were on 5 Salt's Grady White bangin' Tuners when the big motor started dying. Dang thing would just not stay running. So after a fast start, and a continuing problem that we could not resolve, the decision was made to turn for home.

Calvin called CG Depoe Bay and aprised them of our situation and they monitored our progress as we slowly made our way back. Long trip, but thankfully we were not more than 20 miles out. As we got closer and the seas got rougher we realized we were going to have a tough time shooting the hole on the kicker, so asked for their assitance to tow us into harbor. They met us at the outside bouy, gave a professional rundown of what was going to happen, threw us a drone for the aft end and a towline and we proceeded in. Once we got close to the hole they shortened up the towline and brought us home. And while they were dealing with our situation they also were advising another boat coming back and invited them to hang behind and follow our track through the hole. It was quite rough out there.

At no time did we feel unsafe, Calvin handled the situation confidently, and the CG performed in their customary professional manner.

Thank you CG Depoe Bay!
Thank you Calvin!

Lest I be remiss, we also were in contact with several Dogs in the area when we began having problems, and they offered any assistance and kept in touch until we contacted the CG and turned for home.

Glad to hear things went well for you. After the good ending Friday night we headed for Siletz for the last weekend of a 5 week marathon of my sons All Stars baseball. I am so glad it's over! It sounded like a very busy weekend, got quite a few notifications on the pager. It's a good feeling when you are away from the shop and things continue to run smoothly. I could not ask for a better crew than whats currently maintaining the "Hole".

I will second the professional and calm way 5Salt made the calls to the coasties. Consise and to the point. He made me feel calm just listening to him. Good job to all involved. Now get that motor fixed and the DSC thing working!

Nothing like a little on the water training in being towed in by the coasties especially into Depoe.

If anyone has the honor of being towed in by the Coast guard let me say one thing. When they yell "Heads up" and toss the line to you, they mean it. The orange float on the end of the line is pretty hard. When they tossed the line, I lost the float in the sun when I did the "heads up" and wouldn't you know it, it would land right on the top of my head. I looked over at the motor life boat and a couple crewmen were ..... It was pretty funny.

USCG Depoe Bay, thanks for being there!

Glad to hear you made it in okay. We heard a little bit about your plight up at the CR when the Depoe Bay CG was working with you guys. Way to stay calm and collected guys.

Rich, I can't think of anyone better to get a konk on the noggin than you brother. Sounds exactly like what would happen to me in that situation therefore I feel your pain. Still darn funny though.

Rich, I'm verrry glad to hear it worked out okay for you and the other crew.

Seems like you've been having your share of mechanical "opportunities" lately. Let's hope they're all behind you know.
