Re: Wheres am I?
I had no idea the Rogue river went completely underground and you could walk over it.
We didnt take the standard approach to the area, as we walked into it from the opposite side. After walking over the bridge and checking it out from a close up perspective, we climbed the fence and got to the normal viewing point. I was amazed at the force of the water as it slams underground, you can feel the whole ground vibrate as you stand in the area.
Be very careful to not fall into the river on the upstream side, I doubt you would get out before you were slammed thru the tunnel, which I dont think anybody would survive.

Re: Wheres am I?
Noe that's really interesting Does it exit as a river or just in a big underground aquifer?

Re: Wheres am I?
Did you also check out the Gorge, just up river from Union Creek? It does not go underground but is very impressive as well.
I love that country up there.......

Re: Wheres am I?
I wish I could remember the details or find the story on the web, but I can do neither.
It was probably 15 years ago at least, and it was an accident of some type. I don't recall if it was a Kayaker or someone that fell into the river by accident.

Re: Wheres am I?
I can assure after standing there at the mouth of the tunnel, there is better odds of winning the lottery this Saturday with no ticket, than living thru the tunnel.
It is amazing the force of the water going thru there.

Re: Wheres am I?
BoE did you have pie at the union creek restaurant I hear it is outstanding. Although I have frequented the area quite a bit in past years I have never stopped and my brother-in-law tells me they go every elk season for pie it is the best.

Re: Wheres am I?
Pretty funny Bernie,
We went to diamond lake first, had some car troubles and limped towards medford to get it fixed, then back up to crater lake, down the rogue for an evening, over to the oregon caves, headed to cresent city and spent a night on the middle fork of the smith skipping rocks and looking for stones for the rock tumbler, drove thru the redwoods with a stop at the trees of mystery, up the coast spening a night at Coos Bay on to lincoln city and across to home.
Seems I was right behind you most of the way

Re: Wheres am I?
On trail to tunnel there's a pair of Ponderosa's. One is just trunk left from a lightning strike. The other is feeding it threw its roots. Very nice trails and view points , every pull out is well done , with natural sites and facts. The river flowing thew lava tube was neat one. The falls on next one was a s well.
