Default Mayday decals

I once picked up some decals from a Coast Guard Auxiliary booth at the commercial fishing expo in Seattle. I haven't seen them handed out anywhere down here but due to the recent events I'm going to call the Auxiliary tomorrow and get some ordered.

I found the catalog number on a Coast Guard site so hopefully they are still available. These stickers contain both Mayday and Pan Pan dialog on them. They are probably 5" x 7" in size and have blanks that can be filled in by the captain for things such as "Boat Name", "Registration Number", etc. They can be stuck up near your VHF so your crewmen know exactly what needs to be said.

I will try to get as many of these as they will let me and perhaps we can get them all disbursed at TA meetings, tuna tournaments, whatever. In the meantime create your own!

Skein had a great idea of making some laminated cards with just enough info on them to give directions on how to use the GPS and VHF and attach them in a conspicious place so if the captain ever is disabled the crew will be able to run basic functions on the electronics.

As we can all tell by todays events it will only help your chances and speed up recovery.

I spoke with Ed Burns of the Coast Guard Auxiliary here in Portand today and he's ordering me 150 of the decals for emergency radio protocol. These are really nice stickers that you can put near the radio and if any of your passengers need to use the radio they can read right from the card.

Once I get them I'll try to get them out any way possible.

If we need more Ed said "no problem".

A laminated card with VHF channel info for Coast Guard, Salty Dogs. And cell phone numbers for coast guard would be nice to. All the information close at hand when the emergency arrives. Cell phones are still ok up to about 20 miles.

If you have Ed Burns call me at the Station 541-265-5381) I'll see if I can order plenty for distribution. The Auxiliary are a key player in our operations and do a lot in the preventive SAR missions. R

I've developed a deck of cards that I go over with
all my guests. There are scenarios and guests that
I suspect wouldn't work out well - man overboard if
it's me is the one I worry most about.

In addition to MayDay and MOB, I have a series of
cards illustrating right-of-way, especially including
two "law of tonnage" examples. Since I operate in
the lower Columbia, these rules are important to know.

Finally, I have a copy of "The Pelican" to entertain
guests at the end of the safety briefing.

The Pelican

A wonderful bird is the pelican
His bill will hold more than his belican
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week
But I am danmed if I can see how the helican

G'day
