Default Looking at getting a new dog...

I am looking for a new dog. After doing a lot of reading I am considering a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Do any of you fellow Ifishers have one of these? If so what do you think, and where did you get your dog. This breed sounds like the best all around gun/family dog that I have been able to find. Any dog I get will have to be a family dog first and a hunting dog second.

Thanks,

Andrew

I am looking for a dog that will do both upland and waterfowl. I have had labs in the past but have been doing research on some thing different and it keeps leading to the Griffs...

They are AWESOME let me know if you find one.

Very similar to the Wirehair but less rangie. Good family dog and have a touch more loyalty than a wire hair. Wirehairs just go and don't care what happens, these dogs tend to think a little more. I am sure its dog specific but that has been my expirence. I have a Wirehair but next round will look into the Griffs.

Some folks up the road from me have a griffon, I agree in that it seems to be less high strung than a GWP.

What kind of upland bird do you intend to hunt mostly? Half time on pheasant, or 90% pheasant/quail and a little bit of chukar, or...?

Griffs tend to be plodders, generally hunt within gun range. That's fine on pheasant, quail, grouse and the like to have a dog that hunts like a flusher...but if you are looking to focus on chukar it's far and away better to have a staunch pointing dog with range.
