July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaquina
Ok teams and other interested parties, I'll post this once and only once. The USCG Aux Yaquina Bay has graciously offered to do vessel safety inspections on Friday July 21st at South Beach. They are waiting for me to advise them if indeed this is something they should plan for, as well as how many vessels. They would be willing to start as early as 3:00 and work until people have to leave for the MANDATORY Captains meeting that is being held at 6:00pm July 21st at the Shilo.
So, the Captains for sure, and most boats will need to arrive on Friday. If you are interested in a vessel safety inspection please respond to this thread with your team/boat name, and what time you will plan to arrive. The Auxillary wants to help keep us safe, but I am not going to have them standing in a parking lot hoping people will show up.
This is another voluntary request by the Oregon Tuna Classic to try and keep participents as safe as possible.
Boats to be inspected:
Just Keep Fishing- By 5:00pm
ODIN- Anytime after 3:00pm
Triple C- Moored anytime after 3:00pm
Taylors Viewpoint- 4:00pm
Keywest- 4:30 or so
San Anita- After 3:00pm
Retaliate- After 4:30pm
In Pursuit- After 3:00pm
Irish Wake- Somewhere in there.

The "Time Out" will be there Friday around 4:00PM. I would like an inspection either on the trailer or in a slip.

Thanks to those who have signed up. I will be contacting the Aux. this weekend to let them know that we have at least this many boats.
Nice going guys!

Are boats that are not in the tourney, but going out that weekend eligible for the inspection?

Yes, as long as you commit to being there it is open to all boaters.

Not trying to horn in, and I know that tourney boats should take priority - just thought since I'll be there and if they have time, I'd like my boat inspected before its first run out. Thanks Nalu! I'll post a time after our crew meeting tomorrow night.

Just remember - For a tax deductible $200 you could get in on the tuna tourney where you get up to 5 shirts, a gift pack, 5 tickets to the grand prize raffle, entered in the day of tourney raffle, dinner and beverage supplied by the Rogue Brewery, official OTC Burgee, and of course the thanks of the Oregon Food Bank and Ducks Unlimited. Heck, even if you don't go tuna fishing, it's worth it! Of course today is the deadline......

Re: July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaqui
I will keep that in mind the next time around. I'm not sure I want the pressure of a tournament my first time out - lots of other things to think about and focus on. I don't want my competitive nature to cloud my judgment. Besides, I'd kinda like to retain my first TUNA! But like I said I'll keep it in mind for the next one. Thanks again!

According to the rules you can have 6 person teams. Does that leave one person on a six man team with out a chance to other prizes and a shirt and dinner?

Re: July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaqui
YES-
The six person teams were to accomodate any six-pack charter boats that entered. The number was bandied around with some saying 4 person teams, and others 5 or 6. We settled on allowing 6 people, but to reduce cost we maxed the shirts and raffle tickets, and dinners to 5. The entry fee per tournament is rediculously cheap, and entrants can always purchased additional shirts, dinner, and of course I would hope their team can figure out details on how to split any prizes. $40 a person for a 5 person team, or $33 per person for a 6 person team per event, or $30 per person for 5 person team or $25 per 6 person team if you entered all events. We made the entrance fees minimal this year to gather support and to try and make sure everyone had as little cost to participate as possible.
I know of no other charity function that so much is being done on behalf of the participents for such a small entrance fee. We understand the cost of participation in fuel and other items by the participent, hopefully the participents understand the cost associated with trying to give as much as possible to the charity, and to the anglers.

Re: July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaqui
Mike I with you on this!! we have a 4 person team and my total entrance cost for ALL THREE EVENTS was just over $100. Now I find out I get dinner and a Tshirt! nevermind the posibility of raffle ticket winings. most of my cost will be in getting there and my boat share.
So is the dinner the day of the tourney or the night before?

Re: July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaqui
Regardless of weather, the Rogue Brewery will be providing food and a couple of beverages for the Newport event starting around 4:30pm. If the weather is nice, the food service will be outside of the Spirit House, and if it is not we may have the opportunity to move it inside the brewery warehouse.
Current plan is BBQ tuna loins. Subject to change, but this is what we discussed today.

Mike, Irish Wake would like to get in the lineup for an inspection. Appreciate those guys doing it, and your putting it together - on top of everything else you're doing.
We're all gonna be winners this weekend, even if we don't get out.

^^Bump to the top^^
Nalu, if you talk to them again, Irish Wake will be there at 3:00. I'm gonna drag the boat over just for the inspection if nothing else. See ya at the Captain's Meeting.
And thanks again for the HUGE amount of effort you've put into this event.

Re: July 21st-Team arrivals/Captains meeting Yaqui
Skein- No problem.
Here is a copy of the e-mail I received from the Aux.
> Hi Mike, Thanks for following through on this. I think we will be able
to accomodate your group as listed. I, and probably another member or
two, will be at the South Beach Marina parking lot in uniforms shortly
before 3 pm on the 21st.
Here is a suggested Vessel Safety Check schedule for the boats:
3:00 pm Odin and Triple C
3:30 pm San Anita and Taylors Viewpoint
4:00 pm Keywest and Retaliate
4:30 pm In Pursuit and Just Keep Fishing
Because a number of your members wanted their VSC's around 4:30 we have
had to set a couple of them a half-hour earlier. Of course they can
switch around with each other if that would work out better.
Hopefully this will be a suitable arrangement. We appreciate having an
opportunity to provide this service to your organization. Regards, Tom
Skein, you can switch out with ODIN if that's ok since he is no longer planning on brining the boat down due to the weather.
Anybody else want to take this opportunity to get their boat inspected?

Check with your tax advisor... a donation where you get a tangible benefit (shirts/raffle tickets (gambling - just like the lottery..only deductable from your winnings) dinner and beverage, OTC Burgee, gift pack)...in return is NOT a charitable donation even to a non-profit org. and is NOT tax deductable.

That might be a good question, but none of the things that we are giving out come from the $200 entry fee. Shirts, buckets, raffle prizes, burgee, gift pack are all things donated by sponsors. These things are nice perks, but the money from the entry fee, plus additional funds from sponsors goes directly towards the cost of canning the tuna that is caught at any of the tournaments, or donated in some fashion by our non-profit to the OFB or DU.
I'm no tax advisor, so maybe Mel is right. I assumed that since the entry fee wasn't buying anything, and solely being used as a donation to the charity it would be valid as tax deductible.... ????
Well, who cares? It's still a good cause that a lot of people have stepped up to support regardless. The end result is that for a team entry fee you DO get some goodies, and can feel good that you are personally making a difference to those in need. I know some on this board can't afford it, and some choose not to participate, and that's their choice.
