July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
I had a request to post how to get to the boat launch the tournament people will be using. Here is is:
Green is where the food will be served, red is where you enter, and blue is the ramp.
If coming from the North, take the first right after you cross the Yaquina Bay Bridge, follow that road down and cross under the bridge. Turn left where the red arrow shows, and this will bring you into the parking lot for the tourney participents. There is a short road that leads to the ramp.
Coming from the South, turn righ at the signs to South Beach before the Yaquina Bay Bridge. This should bring you to Bay road, and you will need to turn a quick left, then right into the parking lot. This old ramp parking lot is all ours for the tournament.
This is the area where we will be staging. You are not required to use the area to launch, but all the fish will need to be brought here, and this is where the food is. The Port of Newport is clearing space, and there should be ample space for rigs with trailers, and even people that wish to dry camp. The Spirit House is noted by the green arrow, and this is where Rogue will be serving food. The parking area in front of the Spirit house will be blocked off to parking so we can mill about. Seating will be limited, so it will be highly recommended that you bring a lawn chair or something of that nature.
This ramp and parking area will be open to tournament participents ONLY. Tournament Flag will be required for any vessel launching or retrieving, as well as parking tags in the vehicles. Sorry to our Salty Brethren not participating, but this is for Tuna Tournament use only.
Mike

So, how did you swing getting them to let you use the old ramp? I've been wishing they would have both it and the new ramp open on busy days, like all depth halibut days and great weather days.

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Ron- We simply asked, and the Port said OK. We are also going to power-wash the ramp so it is usable. With little traffic, the ramp is pretty slick. I don't think I would want to use it if it wasn't cleaned off. Lots of slime and algae build-up. I don't think it would be too good just opening up every once in awhile.

Ron,
Speaking of the new ramp...is that it at the top-center of the picture. I haven't been there since the new one opened.
Thanks

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Yes it is, I actually like some of the things about the old ramp. The new one is fairly level at the top and then a sudden change to the angle, no transistion. The old ramp had a transistion and the top wasn't level, it sloped down. My problem is that the back wheels drop out of sight when they go over the "edge" of the new ramp. I'm used to it now, but I don't like it. The new one has about 5 washdown spots though and that's nice.

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Is there any chance for us to tie up there for the night? There is quite a lot of space as I remember. Been there just once. Trying to deceide where to launch from. Depoe or Newport. For instance, if coming from tuna town, how much further is it to go to Newport instead of Depoe? Because of the likely swell direction it would be a bit better ride on into Newport I would suspect! Maybe launch at Depoe then come on in to Newport?

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Ice is still up in the air. There is not a large amount of ice at S. Beach for easy access. We may have some limited amounts in totes, but not enough to provide for 50 boats. That's between 12,000-15,000 lbs of ice to manage to transfer to S. Beach in addition to all the ice that we need to have on hand to pack the tuna in for transport to the cannery.
We'll know my the first of the week.

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Mike it would be best if people get their own ice...we're going to have our hands full with the other logistics.
It was a pain in the butt last year trying to ice 20 boats let alone 50!
With that many teams, we need you guys to be as self sufficient as possible...Mike will have too many other things to deal with. Get your questions answered ahead of time so we're not dealing with them the day before or the day of.
Everyone's cooperation is greatly appreciated!!
Bud

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
isnt there a place on the embarcadero that sells bulk chip ice...you know the flat REALLY COLD stuff? whats it called, trident? Neptune? Posiedon? I think they sell it by the ton tough, so bring your truck....
hey not a bad idea for some entrepenurial sort!! buy several truck load sof the stuf and pile it in the parking lot and sell it by the shovel full!! Ill be too busy fishing to do it, but someone who is not fishing should take the idea and go!

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
Gentlemen, Bud is right. As much as I would like to coordinate getting ice for everyone, it's really not feasible. Best bet is to plan on getting it yourselves. If someone has a trailer or extra totes, getting it from Trident and sharing would be great.

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
While Mike and Bud have your attention....
I have some names, but would like them to respond here as well, if possible, along with whomever else wants to help out.
Looking for willing crews to slice out stomachs and esophagie (..uses?) of tuna for the diet research lady, Sarah Glaser, who will be here.
Just email or pm me and I'll handle the rest.
thanks much for the help!

Re: July 22nd, Tournament- Boat launch info
I must have missed this Bill.
Am I to assume that we do not gut the tuna, to aid in the chilling process? Are the fish to be chilled at all?
I quess the most basic question would be, how are the tuna to be handled after boating?

Please take this discussion to another thread and leave this open to specific questions about Newport logistics.
Thank you-

I have a gas powered pressure washer and will be down Friday
morning. My boat is moored on B dock. If you would like me to bring it down let me know.
