Steelhead bait
Last summer while night fishing Drano lake, there were some guys nearby that were doing quite well on the steelhead when nobody else was. It appeared that they were fishing on the bottom with a bait that would just about knock your head off from the smell of garlic. I suppose that they were using some type of garlic scented floating bait. Similar to, dare I say, Powerbait? Does anyone have anything to add to this?

Re: Steelhead bait
I occasionally use garlic scent as a followup scent additive to eggs or shrimp if the fish aren't taking the normal cures I'm using. It can be really effective during some of their moods. I've had a little more success doing this with chinook salmon than with steelhead; but I've also done it more often on the 'nooks. - RT

Re: Steelhead bait
RT- I'm curious about this! Do you add garlic to another scent like shrimp or is it one of those scents that has additives Need an advantage on Mike tired of watchin him catch fish on cheetos TM

Re: Steelhead bait
TM, be careful and use it sparingly as a followup when your regular stuff isn't producing. No, I don't add it to other scents. The 2 ways I use it is to very lightly sprinkle some Spice Islands finely powdered white galic (it's strong and quality) on a few of my egg clusters, either the night before or out on the river, as I would other additives; such as powdered sodium nitrate for 'nooks. The other is to just put on a drop of Mike's brand garlic oil on your baited rig and cast. It stays on pretty well and isn't an overpowering garlic. - RT

Re: Steelhead bait
Pro Cure has a very strong garlic oil, i maen real strong.
i have caught fish on garlic but most of the time I don't use it. It's not a sure thing but when it's working it sure works good.

Re: Steelhead bait
Get to be buddies with a small meat processing plant employee. Get the FDA Food Grade quality, as you should with sodium sulfite. Only use it very lightly sprinkled on some of your eggs for chinook fishing. I suggest not using it on eggs intended for steelhead fishing. - RT

Re: Steelhead bait
Isn't "Slamola" sodium nitrate?
If not, what is it, cause it seems to be something like it.

Re: Steelhead bait
From what I've heard, it is a combo of a preservative stronger than sulfites, likely nitrates, and MSG.

Re: Steelhead bait
Just a note. I was in BC Anglers shop in Oregon City last night and saw that he had some bags with sodium nitrate, etc. in them for sale. This is a good little store for those who don't know. Only trouble is it's in the same strip mall as Fisherman's Supply. The shop has a TON of make-your-own spinner stuff (their specialty), but I buy my shrimp there too.
