Heard a good thing about wolves today
I talked with a buddy I was in the navy with who lives in idaho, He told me there elk harvest has went way up since wolves hit the area. he talked with a state bio for the area as to why. and was told that its because of the privet land factor. you see in years past the elk would get pushed off public land to privet chunks of ground that were off limmits to hunting or were locked up by guides and outfitters the elk recived little pressure so harvest was low. now with the wolves they to head to the privet land and attack the herd sending the herds fleeing back out to public ground. this is why the harvest rate has stayed the same or increased across the state. the bio told him to enjoy it because from the data they got on the winter range the herd is way down.

Re: Heard a good thing about wolves today
This might hold true for the first couple of years. But sooner or later killing more elk will=decreased elk numbers. There is just no way around it.

Re: Heard a good thing about wolves today
With wolf packs in the habitat elk (My Opinion)will have to be on high alert ie.stressed 24/7 days a week.
Private land that may have been a safe haven now holds no relief. Wolf pack(s) in a 20 sq. mile area means elk are constantly being hunted and eaten(or just killed).
Let's not wait 10 years to see what happens, we already know!

Re: Heard a good thing about wolves today
Thats why I posted this because on every thread about the wolves someone brings up the fact that hunter sucsess is better than ever. this is why stright from the big game Bio. in his essesment there is a large chunk missing on the winter range and they figure only 10% calf and that was a high estiment. so yes we should see more elk on public land for a few year once the wolves get here but it will be short lived and then we will see boom and bust for both animals. there will be a lot of hungry wolves once they run out of natural feed. \I think we need to introduce Moose, caribou, into oregon also what the heck need to feed wolves something. lol

Still hold to the the motto SSS . Think this is best for the elk herd. And with the reports of wolves attacking dogs and people, best for us as well.
