Default Duck Calling

What word do you blow into your call? I use wack or quack (as the instructional tape said to do).

No word exactly IP...it's more of a gutteral grunt developed from deep within.

If I could spell it I guess it might look like this...

mmmmmguuuuut guuut guut guut...and so on down the scale.

hope this helps

'Dwit' or 'Quit' to make the single quack sound. the key is start and shut it off quickly.

for a feeding chuckle i use 'Tik' Tikka' Dug' Dugga'

i use 'Tikaaaht' (for rolling a chuckle right into a quack. it takes some practice, but if you hit the 'K' hard and break it off into the aaaht sound it works pretty good.)

I've tried the quack, wack, quit, dwit. Here is what I could recommend. Show up in the marsh about 3 hours before shooting light and then just talk to the hens. Listen to them and talk back. Find out whats makes them leave there feed area and comes over to take a look at you. Remember out here mallards are just one of the things that we have. Learn your whistles they are more important than your mallard calls. Also movement on the water jerk strings splashers. If you can have a good hideing place. kick the water and make loud splashes. Another good thing is if you are well concealed is that water kicking and then beat your waders hard and loud until is sounds like wings flapping. I have had them get up off the water from over a hundred yards just on the beating of my waders and kicking the water. Yes we all want to master the mallard hen call but it is such a small peice of the equasion.

I've heard calling tapes describe the word as "Hut" or "Fut", but in reality is is NO word that we speak.

Since the tongue rides up and touches the top of the mouth, just behind the front teeth, it's more like the air you push out while trying to make a single whistle between puckered lips.

Air is pushed out, then cut off by your diaphram, filling your mouth cavity, and as the pressure starts to drop, your tongue follows the last of it and kind of helps keep the pressure there, but still lets it's fall a little.

To me the "word" would be somethinng like "Fwhit". There is no SPOKEN word (at least I don't), but that's what I'd be saying, the way I shape my mouth, IF I actually said a word.

When calling, I generally follow the advice of Phil Robertson from a instructional video I have.

I really like the advice you give on the wader slapping and water sloshing, Dan. I can't wait to try that out!

93 days? Really? Aaaargh!!!
