Re: My Favorite Egg Cure........GONE!!!!!!
Fishhead- yeah, I know the company and used the stuff for quite a few years. No longer around. Best replacement I found is the recipe I use that I shared somewhere before on 'the board'. Buy a box of 99.99% borax at the grocery store. Mix it about 2/3 borax and 1/3 brown sugar. Remove the eggs from the fish (forgot what they look like!) and lay them out to drain on a pan or screen. Salt them down good with non-iodized salt, both sides. This will cure them and toughen them up. Cover them with the mixture. Let stand in a cool spot for 12 hours or so. When they are "cured" they will feel sticky to the touch. Cut them into bait sized pieces and roll in more of the borax/sugar mixture and plop into a container. I use butter containers since my wife seems to like to collect them. Put a layer of eggs and a layer of the borax/sugar and continue until the container is full. Top off with a layer of borax/sugar, put the lid on and freeze. The eggs will last up to 3 years in the freezer this way and I haven't found any cure better. As for the cure from Bi-Mart, it's sadly gone. Don't think it was any better, just fast and easy.
