Default Fishing with rags

Again as the name implies I am a rookie to this game. I am one of the 90% who looks at you in awe when you hook fish and I get skunked again. I have started fishing with rags and arrow flys. Do most of you who fish these types of drift gear fish them by themselfs, just themeselfs with scent applied or themselfs and some bait, like a shrimp tail?

The way I use rugs is putting them in shrimp oil the night before I go. Will aeroflys I put some of maries scent on them. I also put some scent on the yarn I use. Get some it is great.

I have heard this pink worm tactic too, but I also wondered how they fished it. I have seen it under a float before, but I couldn't see how the guy had it rigged and how long the worm was. Was it rigged on a jig head or what, and how long is the worm?

Cut the long pink worms and put the lower 2/3 of it on a bare 1/4 oz. barbed jighead by feeding the worm right around the hookbend, keeping the hook inside the worm, until it's snugged against the jighead and the barb holds it there. Then poke the hook thru at mid-worm and tear the hole a bit so that it hangs fairly straight and dangles with action while in the current. Put some shrimp oil on it. Fish them under a float fairly close to bottom; although in real clear water the steelhead will come up to take a shallower presented one as they do with jigs. .... As for rags, the shrimp scent is good. Also try injecting your own or Pro-Cure salmon egg juice nector into the center core, leaving the outer yarn pieces unscented for best action. - RT

Like RT says, cut the "bubble gum" pink worm from the top about 1/3 of the way down. I like to use a regular 1/0 or 2/0 hook and run it down the worm and bring it partially out about 1/2 down the worm letting the tail dangle for movement. I put a corky above the worm and scent the whole rig and drift fish the rig along the bottom. This method was first started as far as I know by fisherman in the Pennisula. The first was Carl Burke a lontime fisherman around the northwest. I have several pictures of nice Steelies ready to be netted by my boat with pink worms hanging out of their mouths.

I like to fish rags with Marie's shrimp scent and a shrimp tail. You can also use eggs and scent. Make sure you have several with different colors of yarn and different size rags. I started fishing rags several years ago on the Olmpic Pennisula and didn't see any used around the Oregon area until the last few years. They work! Two 20lb + Steelhead last year both on rags. Pink worms and corkies aint bad either.

Rags, your comment on pink worms, more info please. Under a float, drifted, or behind a diver like a magnum hot-n-tot. Anyone with 20+ steelhead under the belt needs to be worshiped.
