Default TUNA! trip for 15 rookies

I need a few recommendations from those in the know. My buddy's company said no dice on a "businees trip" to AK this summer (salmon and butts), but he did talk thim into springing for a TUNA! trip for about 15 of thier clients.

I'm thinking a live bait trip would be sweet (and that hoefully they'll let me come along too). Prbably just a 1-1.5 day. Any recommendations for boats? Westport through Newport would be doable.

thanks folks.

If your thinking about Westport you better try to get a boat now, They book up the best captains sometimes a year or so in advance.

Ilwaco has at least one charter boat that specializes in live bait tuna trips. As I have watched them come in the last couple of years they seem to be very successful. I can't recall the name of the boat right now. Also, I believe Tackle Time out of Warrenton is one of our sponsors and a successful charter boat who knows live bait fishing for tuna.

Yea....ditto what Tod said......Gene on the Lady Dee.... it's a 43 ft Delta which is a really great / 1st class boat.

Although I don't know Gene personally, he seems to have a good reputation, and you want a fast boat for tuna.

I'm going with Deep Sea Charters out of Westport this year and will be taking our group on the Rampage. I haven't fished with them yet but did go check out the boat, skipper, and mate. All was 1st class.
Definetely do it soon as the tuna are about to get hot and after that you'll be out of luck.
Good luck and let us know who you've chosen and how they do for you.

Better make sure Ilwaco has live bait this summer. Doug's partner died this winter so things are a bit up in the air.

I second C & E's suggestion. Westport will have live bait for sure, good luck on your tuna hunting.

I have been out to the tuna grounds with Gene on the Lady Dee and I will also recommend him.

What a good time that was.
