Default Halibut in Nehalem Bay ????

Last week my friend sent me a fax of a clipping from a newspaper (I think it was the Hillsboro Argus). The clipping was a picture of a guy next to this very big halibut. Here is what the caption for the picture said:

"Joseph John Provinzano of Bay City caught this hefty halibut off Paradise Cove, outside Wheeler, the morning of Sept. 16. This fish weighed in at 174 pounds and was 72 inches long. Most halibut caught in this area average around 40-50 pounds."

I am reading this right? I had no idea there were 40-50 pound halibut in Nehalem Bay, much less a 174 pound fish. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks!

Dave

That's news to me Fishineer! I'm not a Nehalem Bay regular, but I've never heard that big 'Buts swim up the Bay. I have caught some nice flounder up bays before. Interesting. It would be good to verify it one way or the other. - RT

I'm a Nehalem Bay regular. I also have seen
the story about the 174# halibut. I have
talked to the owner of Wheeler Marina, and
we came to the conclusion that it must have
been a misprint as to the location of where
it was caught. The largest flat fish we know
of caught, that high up in the bay was about
12#. We think it was probably caught in the
ocean off fisher point. I have caught halibut
to 90# out there myself.

The person that caught this 174# fatbutt must have been the same person that caught the 80# + blackmouth in the columbia this year
