My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
So, yeah I was a "gorilla warfare" Ifish poster for a long time only offering up input when I was fired up, especially about heated fisheries issue's of the NW.
Funny how lately I have taking a bit of a beating lately to let's say Ifish members that have seen my pictures and know I am just finishing up school and figure I am a "youthful" and "ingnorant" induvidual.
I live, breath, eat, drink, and am always consumed by both fishing and fisheries. I had my own STEP project before I could drive a car and at the same time was secretary and on the board of directors for the Corvallis Chapter of the NW Steelheaders.
I have worked over 18 months for the ODFW on various reserch projects back in 1991 with mobile merwin trapnet on the CR to mark recapture chinook projects on the S F Coos in 2000. leaving out many others.
I spent the last 8 summers in Alaska, four of those as a fishing guide, both in remote Alaska and on the road system. I worked two seasons at a private non-profit hatchery in Prince william Sound at a hatchery that that raises > 400 million salmon a year. I have spent the last year and a half (still work for) the USFWS at a Fish and Wildlife Reserach Station that does work all over the state.
I have studied and done numerous reports on the history of the NW Salmon, including reading most of the good scientific research out there, not icluding over 30 credits in fisheries that tied directly into concervation of fisheries of the NW.
I TA'ed two flyfishing/tying classes in college and am an expert fly tyer, spinner maker, and and custom create most of what I fish with, and the only exception is rod building.
I feel that I must qualify myself to those that feel that they may think that wisdom that comes with age. That may be so, but there is much more wisdom that come from experience and having the time, perseverince, and comittment to fisheries and sport fishing.
So, if any of you take offence by what I say sometimes, step back, stop, think about it and certainly don't get offeended. Cause if I seem like I am shouting, I am not, it is just the passion I have for both fishing and fisheries coming out in my opinions, and that of course is all they are.

Ty
Having passion toward our fisheries can either blind one to the truth of how real progress should be made or can allow each of us to open our minds to concepts that are contrary to long held beliefs. In the long run it will be your choice how you proceed and not your passions.
PS you did not slip under my radar

Ty,
I doubt you are much older than I am and I get it all the time too. Sure makes us feel good when we catch a lot of fish to back up our word. Stick by your guns and good fishin Ty.

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
Experience is everything and you have a ton of it good job on all the hard work.
I dont have a problem with it but I have seen a lot of old timers react in the same way to yourger kids that had alot of experience in other fields. I am a mechanic and when I started out it was pretty much the same for me I was just a young buck that was trained in all the fancy new gadgets and didnt have a problem speaking up when someone was old school. in time I learned it wasnt so much my age as how I came across when I offered my opinion. I personaly believe that the way a person sells his experience or story makes it or breaks it on whether or not people accept it and learn from it or discard it.
I am not saying thats what is going on. I was just relating something I noticed when I was young and people acted that way towards me in my field.

Thanks Quasi,
That is why I added this in there:

Quasi, you make a very valid point there. It's all in the presentation.
Ty, we can all appreciate your passion.

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
Look if you can't build a rod then get....to roy's house for some rod buidling
Well, you are mostly right, the part you got it wrong was about experience. It doens't with age, it comes with repetition. In one year of guiding, or being extremely involved your experience can easily out way somebody's who has been fishing their whole life.
It is repetition that allows us to see patterns, and experience things that are rare. I can't say I am in the camp of having enough repetition, but I know how people develop and it applies to careers and hobbies a like.
I think most people just razz guys that are in school. I know I didn't fish while I was in college, I worked and went to class. Those were my priorities then, and it is nice to see you are able to fish!

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
Ty, I did my first fisheries research project in 1980. I followed much the same road you are on now. My passion burned fast for a while, ebbed, and is now stoking up again. I appreciate your words and experience. Keep at it. You must remember that there are many on this board that see the world much differently than you (and/or I for that matter). It doen't make them wrong, just different. All our ideas, viewpoints, and visions are what (should)combine to to form a comprehensive fisheries management plan.
Keep at it, and don't let the ones that disagree with you change your thoughts. Look at what they say, and give their good points the kudos they deserve.
I disagree with many folks on this board publicly about many things, however, I would fish with anyone here any day!

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
Ty, it is too bad you feel you have to lay out your acomplishments to certain ifishers on this board. Not everyone has to agree with what you are saying, as you are only offering up opinions from your own experiences that you feel are valid. My passion for fishing also runs very strong, and I feel like you have a lot of knowlegeable info that seems you are willing to offer. Any time your looking for someone to wet a line with, please don't hesitate to reach me
Thanks, drifterboy {aka John}

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
drifterboy,
It's because of the whiners out there trying to discredit everything (probably kids). If you post a fish picture, be ready to receive negative email and negative posts trying to discredit anything you say, to make themselves look good. I've seen it on this board time and time again, and I'm tired of it.
I wish I could post some ridiculous emails I got about a post in December of one of the steelhead I caught, but I deleted them.
Ty,
Great posts, keep it up! You've done a lot for salmon and steelhead, and 98% of people on ifish would agree.

Re: My mia introduction as an "old new member"!!!
SKP, I agree. It seems we run into these type of people in all avenues of life, not just fish talk on ifish. The type I'm talking about are people who have to put other peoples asomplishments down, no matter what they may be, in order to feel better about themselves.
Like Ty is saying, if people would take a minute and think before reacting, let youself cool of, it seems better judgement will always prevail. I always try to live by the moto, put yourself in someone else's shoes before you try to walk on them.
