Default Archery

I've been thinking about taking up bowhunting for awhile now, but unfortunately I do not have the money.

Anyways, it looks like its fairly complicated. I was looking at some arrows on basspro and it says they need to be cut with a hi-speed shaft cutter. Do you need to order these and then take them to an archery shop and pay to have them shaved down(I thought the arrows were also horribly expensive)?

I'm just curious.

How Much money TOTAL would it take to get a bowhunting setup?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark...go up and see Ted Fry at Raptor Archery. He's on 11th St above or near the hospital there in Hood River. He deals with recurves, longbows, selfbows, and mostly wood arrows. Go look at some of the bows and talk to Ted about having an interest in archery, he's a nice guy and likes helping out new archers. He'll probably let you shoot some bow's and show you the proper fundamentals to start with. Tell him your budget situation, most likely he has some used recurves at his place which will cost alot less then buying something new. The arrows are usually cheaper then carbon also, unless you want a fancy crown dip with a three color crest!

Don't be shy when you get there, traditional archers are usually more then willing to help out beginners.

If you have questions, give me a PM and I'll try to help.

Good luck and most important, have fun!

Are recurves as accurate as compound bows? I know that recurves do not cost as much, but I assumed that was because they are not as accurate.
Would I do good to start off with a recurve?

I started up archery 4 years ago when my brother gave me his old (compound) bow and I've never looked back. It is not complicated or tough. Shooting is a blast and it opens up whole new possibilities for hunting by extending the fall extravaganza by the whole extra month of Sept. I second silverpicker's suggestion to go visit a good archery shop. They can get you set up with a used bow and the arrows you need. You can try both traditional and compound setups and decide whether it's your cup of tea. Be careful though, it's an addiction that can get ahold of you.

There are so many different options. One place that alot of people overlook is the pawn shops. There are always tweekers and they are always selling stuff for their habit. You can also look at the bay and find some deals. I would also look into the pro shops. Traditional is a great place to start and once you start you won't ever stop. Just my .02

Recurves are extremely accurate. But it's just like most everything in life, the more you practice the better you get. Like the first time you kissed a girl, it was a little scary and awkward. But after several times you got better and had more fun!

One reason a traditional style bow doesn't cost as much is because you don't have all the "add-ons" such as sights, rests, stabilisers, releases, etc. But custom bows can run $800-$900! But a good used custom bow will be quite reasonable in price. It's really important to have arrows matched to your bow, it will save you alot of grief!!!

I think there's also a bow shop in your town called Windy City??? They probably cater mostly to compound shooters. So you have a choice of shops to visit, and styles of bows to shoot.

Good luck!

Windy River. Small place, my friend works there some.

Anyways, I am trying to get a job at either Rosauers or Safeway. Minimum wage, 40 hours a week if I'm lucky and then I have to save. Figure I budget out $250-$300 a month on car insurance and gas, plus save money for my truck, and my rifle, and my shotgun, and my halibut rod, and my archery equipment.

Lets see...... get out the calculator, carry the nine, and I think I might have my bow two weeks before the season opens
............ in 2010.

I dunno, I have to get my priorities straight. We'll see.

Dang, anyone have a spare bow he can borrow? i would let him use it if I had one!! Can you sell a gun or something to afford a bow. I think you could get totally set up with a decent new or used compound bow for around 500.00. You can make archery as complicated as you want it. It's all up to you. I would start out basic and then add the fancy add-ons. Aluminum arrows are a lot cheaper than carbon. Solid limb bows are cheaper than split limb. go to a local pro shop and they might sell you a bow and put it on monthly payments or something. Well, good luck on your endeavor and let us know what happens in the future. Kris.

Another question I have is: If you draw an archery tag for deer or elk, can you also draw a rifle tag?

The down side to archery is the start up cost. The up side is that that cost is usually less than the comon rifle/scope combo. Once you have your bow you can shoot all you want without dropping another dime, if you don't loose arrows.

The greatest benefit is the peace of mind you gain when shooting your bow. The focus is very zenfull and when you get it right it feels great!

I sold one of my rifles to buy my first bow. It was a nice rifle/scope combo but I will never miss it. I love my bow and archery as a sport.

Good luck!

First know your draw length by measuring the distance from your knuckles to the corner of your mouth when you straight arm a fist to a wall. That plus figure a manageable draw weight of 55 to 60 lbs. Overbowing leads to bad habits. You can find good bows for cheap with a little searching. I shoot a compound with a finger release. I use sights and perfer aluminum arrows for hunting as I feel they are more forgiving though slower and they also give you better penetration. They are usually alot cheaper than carbons. Since I shoot with a finger release I look for a longer bow, 43"+ axle to axle. With a mechanical release it is not a concern how long the bow is. A peep sight should be installed in the string at a point where you draw closed eyed and then open them to see through it without adjustment to the peep or otherwise in your natural draw position. A 3 to 5 pin sight will quickly help you shoot accurately with the rule of move your pin to where you hit at each yardage until you can be consistant at 10 thru 30 yds for a first year shooter. Don't cheat! Wounding will ruin your hunt as well as a precious animal. Go to 3D shoots to sharpen your skills and to also pick the brains of the veterans. Most any knowledgable archer will help if asked and then some. Information is your best friend so keep asking.

OK, but is it legal to harvest one buck deer for both archery asnd rifle season? In other words, can I take two bucks in one year?

And gottafish, unfortunately I'm still working off my loan for football camp, so I don't think I can take out another loan for a little while. Good Idea though.

Thanks,

Mark

You can buy a general archery deer tag, and DRAW an anterless rifle tag(600 series)in the controlled hunt drawing. Some of those tags do allow the taking of ONE deer.

You can also get a Hood unit tag in the leftover sale(which already happened this year). That would allow you to hunt archery deer AND Hood unit rifle deer. Then if you drew a 600 series antlerless tag, you could hunt for a third deer if you so choose!

Confused yet? I am!

From what arlie's posts instructions, my draw length is 25".
I think. Straight arm fist to wall, and measure to corner of mouth.

I just called Jay. I might head over there later today, try to pick up some arrows and a release. I went to windy river, but I guess they're closed till wednesday. I can pick a rest there right? I hope so. Anyways, I'm pretty excited. I drew it back, wasn't too hard, but what is it set at right now?

I have a '06 martin cougar c4 id sell to the guy for under $500 . Ive got my eyes on a hoyt that id like to get before the beginning of deer season. but still the issue are the arrows because the likelyhood of him and i having the same draw length might not be to good.

So I understand that if you take an archery buck you cannot centerfire buck hunt, unless you have a leftover tag. But what if I buy an archery tag, but I am not succesaful in that hunt. Is it legal for me to buy the 100 series tag that I drew in june?

i don't believe so. you can hunt either the general archery, general rifle, or 100 series controlled, but no combination of the two. success doesn't matter except for two of the 100 series hunts. the early High Cascade and early White River hunts. if you are unsuccsessful in one of those two hunts (if you drew one) then your tag becomes valid for the western general deer season (rifle).

you CAN hunt in one of the above, plus a 600 series antlerless, and any additional (leftover) tag you buy.

pretty sure that's how it goes.
