Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
I hope this post is OK, but I think it is since GI Joes is an Ifish sponsor...
On a tip I went to the Salem Joes and they have almost all of their bismuth, their last year packages of remington steel, last year packages of federal steel, and their remington sportsman steel all marked at $5 a box!
Yes thats right, $5 a box, including 20, 16, 12, and 10 Ga shells.

These were in their computers as a sale, so I think that means that portland stores should be the same way.
Sorry to those in salem, I bought all of the 12 3.5" bismuth, but there was plenty of 3" left and 10 ga bismuth.

Go get it while it lasts!

picked up 6 boxes of 3" #4's..regular price 19.99/box. i can't beleive they were selling them for 5 bucks.
there was still a good selection of 2 3/4" #6's on friday at the Hillsboro GI Joes on cornell. they also had some 10ga 3.5" BB.

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
I managed 4 boxes of 10ga @$5.00, normally $24.75 ea., plus a couple boxes of 16 ga. #4s (that I can use for Pheasant hunting on WMAs and NWRs) for @$8.00, but still a lot LESS than what they normally get for it!

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
Not all the stores have the special going on. I did pick up 15 boxes of 2 3/4" 4s and 6s between Sherwood and Hillsboro. The Hillsboro store still had about 10 boxes of 2 3/4" 2s. These are great duck load with 1 3/8oz of shot.

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
I was just too late on this one, went to Beaverton, Hillsboro and Sherwood the second I read this. All I bought was 5 boxes of 10 gauge Bismuth BB's. There was nothing else worth buying unless you want 2 3/4 inch bismuth 4's.
thanks for putting this up for others to try and take advantage of!!!

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
I went down to the Joes in Bend and they only had one box of 3" so i bought in, but they also had Tungsten so I bought all of that. Has anyone used tungsten? How do you like it? Also can you use in in a choke the same way?

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
Yes it is a company wide sale. It could be just that the other stores haven't activated those items yet. We're slimming down our shotgun shell line up. We are planning on getting in more boxes of Hevi-Steel and Hevi-Shot later this year.

boy..i sure noticed this last season at the Joe's on Cornell in Hillsboro. the only steel they had was Hevi-Steel. i went in at least 5 times during the course of the waterfowl season to pick up steel shot..only to find nothing of use. the guys at the counter just had to say when i asked when they were going to stock their hunting ammo.
you could really do the duck hunters a favor by stocking a line of 3" high velocity (1500fps) #2 shot. it's about as good a duck killer as there is for normal shooting conditions and runs about half the price of hevisteel.

SP,
I second your thought about the 3" #2 @ 1550fps. These are great duck loads and they do number on the geese @ 20yds.

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
All the GI Joe's stores should be carrying the Federal Steel loads. I wish it would be full line but it wont. Then we'll also have the Hevi-steel as well. Which are 1550fps loads. As far as Kent goes, don't hold your breath but I'll pass it along to the buyer. We are picking up Estate HV steel loads in 4, 2, and BBs. Beyond that I'll poke Bob's sides a little see what's going on.

IMHO the problem with the Hevi Steel is that it is just too darn expensive with no real benefit. it's not as good as hevishot and only slightly better than regular high velocity steel, but costs twice as much. i honestly believe it is simply a marketing gimmick for those that feel they need something better than the HV steel that is readily available or are looking for that "magic" shotshell that compensates for poor shooting skills.
I certainly don't presume to tell the folks at Joe's how to run their business, but i can offer to you what i, as a consumer, buy. between myself and my hunting buddies we probably buy over 10 cases of ammo during the season. not one box was from Joes. not because we don't like Joes or it's not convenient (it's the easiest place for me to go actually), but they simply don't have what we, and most others, use.
the Federal ammo they stocked last year was limited in availability, not the right shot size, and usually the slower 1300fps stuff.
Remington offers a high velocity version of their sportsman steel loads which you used to carry. it was priced about 10 bucks a box if i remember correctly with the 5% case discount. Kent is great, but it's just a brand. all i look for is shot size (2's), speed (1550fps), load size (usually 1 1/8th oz in a 3" shell), and price..about 10 bucks a box.
the round i described above is probably the single most popular choice of shotshells among waterfowlers in this area. i sure hope i can get them at your store.
i haven't used Estates personally, but would be willing to give them a try if they are available and priced right.

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
I really don't know why they've dropped one brand over the next. More and more it seams like an overall slimming down in general, and carrying just the high movers. That being said, they have been getting better at carrying case quantities rather than just boxes. If you do have a favorite, the best thing to do is let them know that.
Call the corp office, and give them your opinion. They do listen to those things, and if they get enough calls, I've seen them change on a dime. For this year, the biggest problem is going to be ammo availabilty and price. With the cost going up alot of the production if not all of it is already spoken for.

Re: Waterfowlers!! Steel/Bismuth CHEAP
Ed,
Thanks for the tip on the bismuth. They didn't have much, but I got four boxes. The really cool thing was that there was a bin of closeout decoys sitting there. I asked the kid behind the counter how much they where and he says, "$1 a piece."
"Really." Says I. "I'll take all of them."
"All of them?"
"ALL of them."
What a bargain. I figures it at about$200 worth of decoys for $34. I'm still skipping. A doz pintail, half dozen woodies and the rest mallards. Serendipity.
